Which Focusing screens and adapters

I have a question about focusing screens. I simply do not know witch one to chose for my kind of photography. I focus most on moving subjects like small airplanes, choppers, birds, kite-surfers and other water sports.

For the 600D I see 8 types focusing screens and for the 7D 6 types.
Which one for my kind of focusing should I use? Which Split prism or an other type?
I see also K-5 K3 Focusing Screen (AF Frame) and EOS 7D K3 Focusing Screen and so on...

Is it possible that with these screens I can use the AF lenses as well? Perhaps even better with moving subjects.

7D for moving subjects mainly. (That’s why I bought this camera)
600D for macro, portraits and scenery.
I think that I also need better adapters for both camera's. (V6 ships or V5).
All this is new to me. First the steps to improve my equipment before I can focus on the next step.

Personally I've found it to be a trade of between brightness and depth.

Now, there are some screens that are designed for "fast glass" that is, they will give you a shallower DOF and thus a clearer indication of what in focus when using lenses with say an aperture larger then f2 . These types of screens are great at f2, but when using glass that is slower, say lenses with a maximum aperture of f4, then they actually are not as bright.

Thus the second time of screen will fix that. It will be brighter at f4 (well as bright as was the other at f2) but it wont show you any difference in depth between f2 and f4. if you are using Auto focus lenses, just get what ever will be the brightest and go nuts. If you want to use really fast glass and manual focus, get the other type of screen.

Screens are fairly easy to change however. I change mine depending on what it is im doing. I have a Cannon S-Type focus screen for when Im using f1.4 lenses (I use old takumars on a pentax K10 so I want to see whats in focus) and when I'm out looking for birds in trees I actually uses a Kats-Eye which has a split prism, and is brighter at f3.5 than the S-type screen.

Any of that make sense?

Out the auto-focus guides are just that. For you you to be reminded of where the auto-focus points are. Personally I hate that crap and prefer screens without any grid lines / marks etc on them. But hay, that's just me. And yes all lenses will still work with any screen. (from what I understand most focus sensors are blow the mirror anyway?)

Hey all and thank you tromboads.

I did some searching and found something.
EOS 7D K3 Focusing screen
http://www.focusingscreen.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_104&products_id=902
And for the 600D – EOS K3
http://www.focusingscreen.com/index.php?cPath=21_120

And came across a site where the K3 focusing screen is used inside a Pentax Kx with 600mm lens.

Installation instructions 600D – 7D and more.

Are there more 600D and/or 7D users who are using better focusing screens?

Thank you and have a nice day(light)

Yep Smile

And yes I'm surprised the 600D and 7D focus screens are different actually. And Cannon are usually pretty good at recycling parts all over the place. Anyway, Happy exploring! Smile

Others here have simply cut screens out of old SLR's to the size required and fitted it. You could always have a crack like that first?

I've done that. It works well enough.

Now I have to to find camera's who has almost similar focusing screens which can be changed with the original of the 600D and 7D.
And perhaps also for the Oly E-520 to.
I got 3 camera's from the family a few day's ago. Ones they heard I’m collecting these old camera's and lenses. (You never know when you might get lucky)
Canon EOS 1000f N This one has a fixed screen i think.
Canon EOS 3000 N
Praktica super TL3
Konica autoreflex TC

Is there a list or module about focusing screens about their size/thickness etc...
Or a list in which camera they could fit in? With some adjustments.
Who has changed their screen of a 600D and/or 7D?
According to the next site I saw that for macro photography you should use a clear spot with engraved double/etched cross for parallax focusing.
