Nice photos Roger but I'm not a fan of this type of bokeh, I find it distracts from the image itself, but that's just me and I'm probably in the minority lol

I would bet I'm the strange one... Ha. But i realistically Bought this lens just because of the look that it produces.

Nice shots of Clematis,And no you are not strange Roger there must be a large following of this type of Bokeh or the lenses that produce it would not have drastically increased in price. Rolling Eyes

I hear that. It was challangng enough to find someone within driving distance selling one.... So I jumped when I found one.

Basically most lens produce similar soap bokeh if back light available in backgroun like here, no matter who made lens, what lens , this is natural behavior of any lens. Some of them give more extra bokeh draw , those are most wanted lenses in Asia and slowly most wanted as well in Europe. Meyer Trioplan 100mm f2.8 is most well known obvious example. Jupiter-3 is a great lens without doubt I also have many from many different years for 'soap bubble' shoots not best choice as John said a bit disturbing on some photos , makes full scene to very busy, lack of subject , all things melt together. On best 'soap bubble' shoots, (mostly made in China, Indonesia) subject is still remarkable pops up and background give extra draw, but still support main subject. Have to learn it and master it, just like anything else.

Oh I agree that there are much better options but I was hard pressed to find something in a fairly common and in a easy to use mount that is fairly fast for its cost.

I also like this for portrait as it has a nice glow. But early on in my research I decided I liked its look and wanted one. One of the reasons i started shooting manual lenses was because I enjoy different results.

I have discovered a couple of gems along the way but most are quite a bit larger or in some cases the adapter is as large as the lens, and the small size on a mirrorless is nice when traveling light. A added plus to be sure.

I also find it very usable wide open. At least for my requirements. It's of course sharper in the center.

To me distracting both , especially second fence.
I do also try every lens Roger in this kind of light situation, these a great style, I love it a lot. Many lens fail, some awesome and a bit location dependent as well. Backlight position, power matter as well , not only lens.

Oh dear I seem to have started something, I did say Rogers shots were nice, I did say Im not a fan and find it distracting but I didn't say I found Rogers photos distracting, perhaps i should have said I find it distracts in some cases lol, I think it's just a personal thing for example I quite like swirly backgrounds as long as its not to heavy Very Happy at the end of the day if we all liked the same thing it would be very boring to debate lol

I would say that "real" bubble bokeh are more distinct and clear. Very few lenses can make bubble bokeh IMO.

The lens is superb but this white on white I personally find distracting,the orchid is lost.

yes, +1 Trioplan 100 is a very interesting lens, I never get real friendship with it, I bought and sell after at least 3x. I kept only pre-war lens due it's rarity, I still need to find sweet spots of Trioplan 100. J3 was love at first sight.

Some people just love shooting those types of photos and let's face facts, its much easier for someone manually focusing to "track" a stationary object.

Regarding these Jupiter-3 shots, I totally agree with everything Attila wrote. I am wondering how much effect people's monitors have on their perception of these shots. For me, the original poster's shots look OK, but very flat. I can see how, on the right monitor with certain settings, they would have pop and a 3D look.

I bought my first J3 few years ago. then someone on this forum (I think he's from Poland) asked me to bought it.
I should not sell it.
Lucky me, I got J3 optical block only for cheaper price.
This was old file,
For most of us here, distracting bokeh is the main object. The person, flower or any foreground is just addition heehehe. Any lens can do sharp image, but not certain kind of blur
