hi, just picked up a load of old lenses, m42. on a couple at the base they can switch from M to A. what does that mean?

Hi, M is manual aperture and A is automatic, but the latter only works on film cameras.

thanks, thought that, so all the lenses with this should be set to M? thanks, cant wait to get out and try them.

If your adapter has a flange that depress the aperture pin, it doesn't matter, otherwise you need to set them to M.

Just use a bit of caution when mounting a new lens that nothing binds, the later Takumars have been known to rub against the opening in the adapter and cause either the aperture and or the focus ring to bind, the cure was to file the adapter's opening.
