I've never heard of this before - a Nikkor-UW underwater lens, with external knobs obviously for focus an aperture Click here to see on Ebay

The immediate question that comes to mind is, OK, so the lens is waterproof, but what on earth would you fit it on to? I don't think my old Nikon F would like a bath in the sea.

Anybody know?

From the mid 60s onwards Nikon manufactured a waterproof and pressure resistant camera known as the Nikonos. The lens you have is for that camera. I think they were rated down to about 150 feet.

The idea for this camera came from Jacques-Yves Cousteau (famous for his underwater films) and it was built by a french camera maker as Calypso (name of Cousteau`s ship), then the design was sold to Nikon and the Calypso name was changed to Nikonos. Nikon built several different models of the Nikonos.

What a great little camera! I've just found that they still make them - $300 for a 35mm film body and another $250 for an undewater micro-nikkor 50mm. It's something worth bearing in mind for my Mediterranean retirement Smile

HI Klauss!!

Excelent cam pic. The nikonos was the "underwater cam" of the 60's and 70's too. If I don't remember wrong it had a particular shutter mechanism (like the pen F, mercury, etc).

Rino.

Hi Rino, yes, it has a metal shutter, but unlike the Mercury, that has rotating sector shutter, if I recall it correctly.
