I've just taken delivery of a silver Jupiter 11. It was purchased on eBay. It was described simply as a "Telephoto Lens" but despite the poor pictures I recognised it as what I thought was a 'red P' M39 rangefinder Jupiter 11. I already have an M42 11A and and M42 'fat' preset 11 but fancied an M39 lens because the adapter is so much smaller and neater on my Olympus Pen E-PM1.
As soon as I'd torn open the package I was trying to fit it to my M39 to M4/3 adapter, but it wouldn't fit. It does, however, fit on my M42 adapter and has infinity focus. I've not heard of this type of 11 with M42 fitting. I thought these narrow versions were all M39.
Has it been adapted? Or was it built like this?
Thanks
Ed

Judging only from how near is dof scale to the mount this lens has been adapted. Beside that I've never heard of "slim" silver SLR version. |

Certainly been adapted. I have a deeply adapted slim M42 Jupiter-11 (click on photo for more pictures)

There seem to be more versions around. I once had an M39 lens for SLR, indeed it came with an attached ring to fit M42 cameras. I have never seen a small SLR version though.
The one on the left is M39 SLR.

Having compared it to pictures of the standard rangefinder Jupiter 11, the space below the DoF markings is about 1.5cm less, which takes into account the different registration distance of SLR versions.
If it has been adapted, then why? It's been very neatly done, with no clues that there's anything 'non-factory' about it. It would have been a huge amount of work when there are M39 SLR and M42 versions already available.
My only idea is that someone preferred the look of these earlier Jupiter 11s but had a camera that couldn't use rangefinder lenses. |
