Supposedly, Imagons were legendary for soft focus and glow around the subject. While it definitely looks interesting, it doesn't strike me as legendary though Sad. Maybe more outdoor samples with better lighting conditions would show what this lens is capable of???

The effect fully open is something I haven't seen before, but it is interesting. I could be something to exploit?

For those of you who are interested in technical explanation, i have written an article about the Rodenstock Imagon 120mm on my own forum...

http://www.digicamclub.de/showthread.php?t=17743&highlight=Imagon

Use Google translator for that, sorry, but its to difficult for me to describe the Imagon in english language..
There i show in pictures the complete Set of apertures coming with the Imagon.. and how to use them to control the spherical abberations, this 2 element construction delivers.

Cheers
Henry

Yeah, I rather like strange lenses that produce unique results, even if deemed imperfect for normal use.
Definitely interesting for my film work.

I actually shot a music video with a Japanese toy camera a while ago, so as far as I am concerned it's all valid. Smile

Here are some of my images, taken with my Imagon 4.5/120mm on Canon EOS 5D MKII

First woman portrait taken without a disc.. you will get a typical "50th cinema retro style" Very Happy

(sorry, AWB in first portrait image was wrong in the cam... no further PP)

same sujet with medium disc, half closed outer aperture area..

medium aperture disc, outer aperture area fully closed..

As you can see... depending on light conditions, the choosen aperture disc and the dwell angle you are able to control the spherical abberations and also the sharpness in your images.

I love that Imagon for this special dreamy effect...

Cheers
Henry

I found quite interesting the way the Rodenstock Imagon renders the images of lamp filaments. On the other hand, the diffusion in the portrait could be achieved easily with today's post-processing. By the way, the post-processing practically killed the "effect" lenses. Today the designers' efforts turned to what should always have been, that is, to try to eliminate or reduce to a minimum the aberrations of the lenses.

Hmmm I really have the feeling that forum activity is down after the crash.

No doubt the forum crash played a role in the decay of interest in the forum. On the other hand, it is clear to me that the proportion of low-quality, irrelevant posts increased a lot lately.
There are several reasons that explain the drop in the quality of the discussions. One of the problems I detected, and that took me by surprise, is the existence of a strong spirit of clique. I will not go into details here because I could be misinterpreted. After all, it is up to the forum administrators to find out what's going on.

Happy New Year to all!
