For those who are curious on the sharpness of this lens only, here are two photos taken on my NEX 5N for showing the sharpness of this lens. Converted from RAW to JPEG(85% quality) with default sharpen in Lightroom 5. Both photo are taken hand-held.

Far object: about 320 meters away

100% crop of above

Close object: about 2 meters away

100% crop of above

Special thanks to my friend who helped reply this lens to me. Smile

Really nice instrument. These goes much higher than their larger cousin 500mm/F8 for good reasons. Although image quality may not be that different, the size and focal length is much more appropriate for most photography situations.

Exactly. For APS-C camera, 500mm is hard to use without any support.

This juvenile gull was obligingly posed on a fence post as I was biking by. Also hand held, pentax Kr. 800ASA, some sharpening, noise reduction, exposure adjust and contrast boost (pretty necessary with these mirror lenses IMO) in LR.

My copy has some dust on the mirror surface. The dust may affect the contrast but the sharpness seems almost unaffected. Like many other mirror lens, this lens perform well when focus far away and perform less good at marco range.

I think the construction of this lens is similar with the 500mm which you can remove the front group by removing the retaining ring on the front. If you are not sure you can open the ring without damaging it, it will be better to send it cleaned by a professional.

You may be right , I have had a close look at the front and there are signs of possibly "glue" being used..that black ink like mark that you see on some lenses. This is seen in a few areas between the retaining ring and lens body.

Thanks for going OT.
