Making a self-agreement public

I know this doesn't actually mean anything to anyone other than me, but need to say it "out loud" to people who will actually be able to see if I do buy more lenses, and who understand G.A.S. ...

I'm not going to buy ANY new lenses until I take 100 keepers with each and every one of the lenses I already have.

There, said it.

Although we are on opposite sides of the planet, I'm with you on this one! I've been thinking along the same lines for a while now. I've far too many lenses and possibly not enough time left in this life to take 100 keepers from each one! Rolling Eyes Laughing

Very brave statement! Shocked
I don't dare to say that in public.
I have to face Ed's problem. Embarassed
And I think I have to get rid of some lenses, in fact kept for parts or in the waiting for repair department, that will never give me 100 keepers as they are now. Crying or Very sad

Photographer with LBA: "I'm not buying another lens...."
Another Photographer with LBA: "Good Luck"
Lens: "You know you want me, resistance is futile." Twisted Evil

Ah, that's why I added the conditions, with an attainable goal.

Not saying it will work, but I'm trying to create a situation where it can.

More importantly, that's 1000+ decent photos I need to take, right across the focal range. Even if I only get half way there, it'll still be more than worth the wait.

yeah..the G.A.S. syndrome....it happened to me, too! Embarassed but only in terms of lenses, gear....well, i have some cameras, DSLR, DSLM, etc....but more lenses than bodies, cameras. Very Happy

Okay, I think I found the escape clause and underlined it above in the quote.

It was several months ago, maybe even more than that, when I said I'm done (unless something really special comes along) (there always has to be a clarifier). I said I would go into lens selling mode. Since then, I've sold one lens and accidentally bought around 15. While I do have a lot of lenses sitting around which have had little use, my favorite lenses have all received a great deal of use and I either meet the 100 keeper criterion or come close enough on all of them, unless recently acquired. The images counted are those that I post on my photo site, but I also have many keepers that weren't quite good enough to post.

My advice for those who have not yet (over) committed is the same it has been for a long while, but no one yet has taken it, including myself. It is: do your research, using this site and others, to find the lenses that really stand out, then be patient and target just those lenses. In the long run you will save a lot of money. However, and there is always a however, buying and trying lenses can be great fun and a good hobby. Some people actually make a few dollars doing it. But there is one discipline that I believe is really important, and that is to resist the ultra cheap deals - usually of brand x lenses. They ultimately end up collecting dust in your cabinet.

Thanks Woodrim, it wasn't there on purpose, might have been subconscious.

Fixing:

I'm not going to buy ANY lenses or camera-related equipment until I take 100 keepers with each and every one of the lenses I already have.

DO IT!

as in not buying. So dam liberating!

I cut 50+ down to roughly 10, im mind to keep going!

It's great!

I was at a previous stage where I would spend to much time working out which toys to play with, rather then actually playing! Smile

The realization was the character of the lens actually had little to do with the creation of an image. And once I accepted that it was easy to cull the copies and duplicates of focal lengths i had collected..

It's nearly now to 1 focal length (that I want) of the formats I own (M42 and Pentax K) and I feel I'm now at a position to get rid of the K's all together.

My camera equipment will soon fit in a bag readily available from a local camera shop!

Its a wonderful thing!

PURGE

PURGE LIKE THE WIND!?

I once said I would only buy Konica lenses from now on, no more collecting all types of lenses. That didn't last long. Too many good deals on various lenses to resist. To my defense, I have managed to sell some of them for a profit. Also, all the practice I get from dismantling/cleaning the cheap lenses I come across will be useful when I need to work on one of my keepers (or so I keep telling myself).

Faves get much heavier rotation here too.

Other than a few enlarger lenses, I've stuck with 1st party manufactures.

I'm more or less finished buying lenses, just a few left to clear off my list, I've only added one lens to my list this year, a drastic reduction vs the last 3 years, the remaining lenses are all lenses that have been on the list a long while.

How do we solve the "I just want to try a lens out" lens buy, then decide whether I will keep it or not?

There's nothing to solve. You just do it. I will quote myself from earlier post:
Quote:

With the exception of junk, I think trying out lenses is a perfectly legitimate hobby. One can make their own decisions on how much, how often, and how many. For people like myself, some self discipline is required and like a stock market, an occasional correction needed.
I can relate to being a hardware junkie, but I told myself it is more important for me to be the photographer more than the collector. I think I have largely achieved that, but there is still a draw to the gadgets which, I'm afraid, will have to co-exist with this photographer.

why the self imposed restrictions? Are you spending too much money which is missing elsewhere, do you not have enough space for all your gear, or does owning too many lenses make you confuses, makes you enjoy your hobby less? As long as you don't have any of the above or any other good reasons, then why to restrict yourself? If you enjoy it, why not continue to buy and to try out?
ok, I said it, does that make me the devil's advocate?

possibly yes! think of being reborn instead, without lenses, and having to start all over again, not to mention the price level then..

OK, so ...

I bought a new lens. Smile

BUT, I really am keeping to the spirit of what I set for myself. When I started using some of the lenses I had more, I found there were some that just did nothing for me, didn't suit me, or I didn't enjoy using. So I decided to sell three of them, and got the new one for a particular reason.

Selling the Pentacon 30 f/3.5 (didn't really give me anything the Sigma 30mm f/2.8 doesn't already), the Fujinon 28mm (I just don't like 28mm, doesn't work for my brain), and the CZJ 50mm f/2.8 Tessar (focussing is too rough, and I don't have the skills to fix it).

Added was the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 A-is, so I can se if I can add some consistency to my "style" with the Nikkor 35mm f/2 & 85mm f/2. Love working with it, rendering is gorgeous.

So I have less lenses, I'm taking more photos, and I'm feeling more content.

I'd call that a win.

PostPosted: Thu Aug 28, 2014 8:54 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Also worked out that, in my brain, there is no logic to some of this photography stuff.

For some reason, I like really 30mm, but really don't like 28mm. Just because.

For some reason, I have a inbulit, long-running, and strong aversion to Pentax Takumar lenses. No reason for it, it just is, and I can't (not that I want to) shake it. Just out of nowhere.

Anyway, enough rubbish from me. Smile

I think I do too. It must be subconscious as I never think much about it, but with all the lenses I have, there are no Takumar, Nikkor, or Canon. Had one Takumar, but didn't like it.
