Hi all!

I'm looking for a 70/80-200 but there are so many and they all seem good

My main contenders so far are:

C/Y Zeiss 80-200
Canon FD 80-200
Rolleinar QBM 80-200

Are there any other top class 70/80-200 I should look at?

Do any of them get faster than f4?

Do any of them have a macro setting by some chance? This is a nice to have, I will get the C/Y 35-70 as a walkaround + macro lens anyway

Which is the smallest and lightest while still being a good performer? In this case the f4 aperture won't bother me

I will use it on the Leica M240 so mount compatibility isn't on top of my concern but compatibility with my 5D MK2 would be a bonus

Thank you for your suggestions!
Hari

The Rolleinar is also seen as a Tokina, a Mamiya and a Voigtlander, they are all the same lens, made by Tokina.

The Konica Zoom-Hexanon 4/80-200 is also worthy of consideration, it's superb.

here's a wild card- the Yashica ML 80-200 / 4

I think it's a superb lens, the sharpness and colours are first rate, and it's a nice compact lens. It's downfall is the lack of macro and the poor 1.9 meter close focus. In a post I started about this lens there was speculation that it was a Tokina and possibly closely related to the Rolleinar - I have tried to find out more, but information is scarce.

I've got 13 zooms in the 70-230 range Rolling Eyes , including Series 1 Vivitar's, Soligor CD, and the superb Tokina ATX 80-200 / 2.8. This Yashica is now my 'go to lens' for this range. If I want macro - or more likely close focus in this range of zooms - I take a proper macro lens instead.

Well , that is interesting . I am still looking for zoom in this range. I was disappointed by a Rokkor 75/200 and a Tokina SD.
Would you mind to give your list and choose the 3 best ?
Thanks

I suspect the Yashica is made by Tokina and is the same lens as the Tokina/Mamiya/Rollei/Voigtlander.

I sold my copy, it was labelled Mamiya, so sadly we can't put them side-by-side to compare.

If you are an Arm-Strong-Enough man, I suggest the Konica 80-200/3.5. really good one except the weight. Wink

there are two versions of the 80-200/4 on Konica, one is UC-Hexanon 80-200/4, the other is normal 80-200/4, I prefer the former one bcoz the all-distance macro function (0.7 metre maybe?) and the sharpness, but on the 200mm side this lens shows some dispersion and green-edges on the digital cameras. please mention. also I could provide the samples from one of my friend who collected many Konica cameras and lenses: https://sites.google.com/site/chansiu/konica-uc-zoom-hexanon-ar-80-200mm-f4

Tamron 103a
cheap and very easy to find.
If it disappoints, and it probably wont, its little loss.

The Canon FDn 80-200 f/4 L - you won't find a better 80-200 zoom. It touts itself as a macro lens, but in fairness its minimum focus distance is 95cm with a maximum magnification of 0.32x which isn't true macro (but is pretty good for an all-around long zoom lens).

Nikkor 2.8/80-200 AI-s, Tamron SP 2.8/80-200 LD (30A) or Tokina AT-X SD 2.8/80-200 come to my mind... but they are huge and heavy. If you don't need this speed, the Canon 4/80-200 L (this won't work on your 5DII without changing the mount.. which can be done) or Contax Vario-Sonnar 4/80-200 may be the better choice. Forget the Rolleinar/Tokina... same with Konica (I had and replaced them with the Vario-Sonnar) imho those are good, but not the same league.

I like the C/Y Zeiss 80-200 very much. Mine clearly bested my copy of the Tamron SP 70-210/3.5 #19AH when I shot them against each other.

The Minolta MD 70-210/4 is another option to consider, artaphot.ch has a few good comparisons:
