i am trying to follow this one for quite some time.
some how the prices seem to be quite low (20-50 USD) in US & Canada,
while it consistently averages 35 in UK auctions..
Any reason ?

Also AI,AIS, super multicoated, its confusing stuff..
Can some please throw some light ?
Also the yellowing of glass factor ? Is it normal ?
i am looking at it just for its sharpness..

As i will be getting a Pancolar anyway...!!
Please advice ...

Most of the lenses are cheaper in USA.
This is an M42 lens, no AI AIS etc. these are Nikon marks.
SMC = Multi-Coated lens.

I don't think so you need if you have already a Pancolar.

Supply and demand explain the price I think.

Maybe there are more Pentax screwmount cameras sold in the US during that period. This was a "kit" lens on many of them, an upgrade option vs the 55/1.8 Takumar. There were also plenty of cameras brought back direct from Japan/Hong Kong or US Asian base PX'es by US military personnel of that time.

Conversely, there were a lot more Prakticas and Exaktas sold in the UK vs the US.

I have a Super-Takumar 55/1.8 and a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 55/1.8. They look almost the same. I don't think there is any practical difference, but I can't say about the 55/1.4. The difference was supposed to be an improved multi-coating process, but I don't think that made that much difference.

The yellowing/browning effect is supposedly because of radioactive glass, which can be cleared by exposing to UV light. None of my Takumars have that, but I have a Sears (Ricoh/Tomioka) 55/1.4 that does have some browning. It does not seem to affect color rendition or image quality.

Too right. I bought my 1.4/50 SMC together with 4/200 Tak for US$40 in Australia. No one wants these old buggers in Aust Wink
Good for me.

Dakoo, I agree with Attila, if you are buying a Pancolar forget the SMC.
My SMC is not getting any light because my preferred 50mm std lens is Pancolar.

eBay.com.au Old lenses are not plentiful but not popular either. Look for them now and start sending them direct to your friend. Cool

You mean SMC 1.4 and Pancolar 1.8? I think Pancolar is more popular so more expensive. Optical quality wise, my Pancolar wins on colour rendition and contrast but for sharpness they are very similar. SMC however has much better built quality.
Of course, these are my personal opinion.
