G1 is pretty simple to use once you get use to it.

It's kinda funny but when I shoot with the G1 I always use it with the screen facing in.

2 options that I know of. Keep the screen out to the left, or go into the menu and turn off the evf.
The menu has memory so its pretty quick to turn on and turn off the evf.
It's in the menu under LVF/LCD OFF. |
