One year ago I bought also these lens for few euros from a person who sold me Tair 300mm. At that time I didn't bother so much about it. Puted it somewere till I sold Tair300. Then I had a M42 to FT adapter free and tried some photos with it. Altought it is diffucult for me to nail focus with manual focus, sometimes it just happens.

This is the photo of Helios we are talking about:

And some photos with it:

1. Olympus E-30 at ISO100, 1/20s, f2, some pp, added noise and bw look.

2. Olympus E-1 at ISO100, 1/500s, f5.6.

3. Olympus E-30 at ISO200, 1/15s, f2.

I like the lens, but as I said, those manual focus...

It's working, I can see your excellent pictures. I love my Helios, I get consistent results from it and it's a joy to use.

You're a lucky owner of a decent copy of this lens Smile

Great lens!

Own a 1978 Helios 44M myself;
Bought my 1st SLR at Jan. 2012.
Discovered my father's old Zenit E and some Soviet lenses at Apr 2012.
Discovered the existence of focusing screens at Jul. 2012.

It has been my "standard" lens ever since Smile

Same lens, but this time on E-PM1:

Another one with this lovelly lens. This time I missed a focus a little bit, because didn't had my E-PM1 as usual, but friends E-620 and liveview on E-620 is very slow and not so precize for focusing as on E-PM1. The E-PM1 is really a little gem.

Taken at ISO800 and at f2.
Of course the photo have a story. My beautiful Very Happy wife and his father in the blurry background.

Hope you like it.

WOW.
Good serie showing all the qualities of this cheap lens.

I have a 44M since 1979. It was mounted on my Zenit EM Mokva.

From yesterday I have also a like new Helios 44M-6.

E-PM1 at f2, 1/30s, ISO1250, 58mm, no crop:

I'm not satisfied with first results. Or is too much motion blur (IS was off) or the lens is not so good like the 44M-4 brother. Have to check this when I have some time...

At 1/30 camera shake is possible, I suggest 1/90 at least or even more. Also focus seems to be off - if you test two lenses, test them in the same conditions, one after the other - that should tell you if there are issues or not. I read 44-6 is good, it has a higher resolution than 44-2 and coating, but 6 blades which makes bokeh different.

I suggest to make a comparison between these 2 Helios-44 on the same subject in good light at the same time.

Of course I will try both lenses with better light. The 44M-6 shot was with terrible light, but the complete series were very soft focus or out of focus. When I will have some time and some good light I will try both. The weather here now is for waterproof lenses not manual lenses Very Happy

I agree 100%, it's a lens that everyone who has any interest in photography should have. It's a lens that teaches you a great deal while delivering the best images for the money.
