Although I am not familiar with this lens, it took but just a fraction of a second to realize that these images were taken with a mirror lens. You either love them or hate them! I count myself as a member of the former. I had a 500mm f/8 C Nikkor for the longest time. I do often regret selling it, it was light as a feather and so easy to focus and the sharpness would blow you away!
Taken with my D700 and 500mm f/8 Reflex C Nikkor

This is wonderful! You should get the newer N version with close focus ability. _________________ https://lensfever.com/

Thanks! I have mulled over getting another one, but my 600mm f/4 AIS is such an amazing lens, I have a hard time justifying the additional expense. I am up to 14 Nikkors now and don't have room in my gear bag for any more as it is! _________________ Nikon FTn, F2A, F3HP, F4E, F5, Nikkormat FT2, Nikon FE-2, Nikonos V, D850, D500 and D750. 8mm f/2.8 AIS, 16mm f/2.8 Fisheye AIS, 15mm f/3.5 AIS, 18mm f/3.5 AIS, 24mm f/2 AIS, 28mm f/2 AIS, 28mm f/3.5 Nikkor H non-AI, 25-50mm f/4 AIS, 28mm f/3.5 and 35mm f/2.8 UW-Nikkors, 35mm f/1.4 AIS, 50mm f/1.4 AIS, 50mm f/1.4 Nikkor-S, 50-135mm f/3.5 AIS, 55mm f/2.8 AIS Micro w/ PK-13, 80-200mm f/4 AIS, 85mm f/1.4 AIS, 105mm f/1.8 AIS, 10.5 cm f/2.5 non-AI, 105mm f/2.8 AIS Micro, 135mm f/2 AIS, 180mm f/2.8 ED AIS, 200mm f/4 Micro AIS and PN-11, 200mm f/2 ED-IF AIS, 300mm f/2.8 ED-IF AIS, 400mm f/2.8 ED-IF AIS, 500mm f/8 Reflex, 600mm f/4 ED-IF AIS, TC14B and TC300.

Indeed. It seems to be going for double the price of the 500 f8 55B mirror lens.
So here are the possible reasons:
It is a better lens? (the images look pretty good, but that may be the photographer!)
It is a more useful lens? (500mm too specialised, f8 too slow)
It is just a rarer lens? (at the time most people could not afford a 500 unless they bought a cat lens, whereas 300mm regular lenses were more affordable, and still just about portable)
Which do you think it is? |
