We have a new D3200 and haven't yet read the manual, asking here to get quicker answer.

Why does the body arbitrarily change directory and image numbering.

First pics from DSC_0001 to DSC_1099 went to folder 100D3200 ..
and then the damn thing changed folder to 101D3200 and started from DSC_0001 again Mad

how can I change this?

You can't, it only allows a fixed number of images in each folder. It does tell you in the manual. If you could be bothered to read it.

Many cameras do the same.

yes I know, like our Lumix does

File Number Sequence

Set this ON. It defaults to OFF due to a firmware defect.

If left OFF, files will start at 0001.JPG every time a card is formatted, or a blank card is inserted.

.. or changes directory
