What can cause a film to look like it has heavy base fog?

I've just developed a roll of Kodak Imagelink HQ in Kodak DK-50 and it has come out looking like it have very heavy base fog. The film isn't fogged, and the same film developed in other developers comes out with a clear base, so anyone got any idea what could cause this?

It's the second roll I've developed in DK-50, the first one was a roll of Polypan F50 and that had a similar base fog look but in that case it was much less severe and the film was still perfectly scannable.

In both cases, the development looks close to correct, it's just this darkening of the base that is the issue.

What are you using as fixer, is it fresh?

Sodium Thiosulphate. I made a fresh batch and stuck it in the fresh for half an hour as I suspected a fixing issue. No change, sadly, still looks like it has heavy base fog.

Then I developed the second roll I shot today, but in ro9 diluted 1:100 and that has come out the same, like it has heavy base fog.

So I'm mystified. First 3 rolls of this film I developed in Fomadon LQN came out with a perfectly clear base, but now these two have come out with a really dark base.

I've loaded up another short test roll which I'll shoot tomorrow and develop in Fomadon LQN, which gave a clear base before, if that comes out with a dark base then it's obviously the film, but what the hell could have happened to it in the last week to be like this?

Well,I've got to the bottom of te problem - this film doesn't like some developers. The roll developed in DK-50 had a very dark base, the roll developed in RP9 had a fairly dark base. I developed another roll today in Fomadon LQN and the base was almost completely clear.

So it appears this film is very tricky to develop and the search for the ideal developer for it will take a while and a good deal of trial and error.

Barring a light leak, incomplete fixing or fixing in nearly exhausted fixer can do it. Do not exceed the capacity of the fixer.
