A very good lens but not as good as my Konica 2.8/24.

Nice samples.

I have this lens too.
The Flektogon 25/4 is slightly better in contrast, color, closer mfd.
I also have the zuiko 24/2.8 mc, also slightly better in sharpness, contrast and color.

I guess 24 must be different to 28 in some technical way? It's 10 degrees difference which through the viewfinder is certainly noticable, but its not a massive difference. So why are 24's less common and more expensive ?

I've got a few, the Japanese CZJ 24 / 2.8 is best ignored, the Ensinor / Elsinor is excellent ( Clubman + Tefnon ) and a Hoya is very average, but the results of this Yashica ML are very good. It's not uber sharp, but it's not 'soft' - to me it has a 'reality' that makes it it very good.
I've been on a Yashica ML kick for a few days now with the 80-200 / 4, 50 / 1.7 and the 28 / 2.8 - and I love them, I'm getting a high hit rate of sharp and nicely exposed pictures with good colours. What's not to like about cheap and great glass like this?

Like like a good lens from these shots. Of course It does have a pretty good reputation, in general, and is definitely one that I want to try. I've never quite managed to get hold of a copy - as I find the going rate on eBay a bit too high.

I think 24s are more complex to design and build. Really good 28s are not so common imho, the Konia and Minolta 3.5/28s, the earlier 7 elements versions are among the very best, as is the Nikon AI-S 2.8/28. However, there are quite a few that are nothing special like the Canon FD 2.8/28 and Kiron/Panagor 2.5/28. Third party 28s are often mediocre and need to be closed to 5.6 to perform.

I had the CZJ 2.8/24 made by Sigma, not bad but not great either. I had the Cosina 2.8/28 that also appears as a CZJ and it's poor,muted colours and low contrast. I had an Ensinor, it was good, and I had a Hoya too, which is a Tokina, I actually thought that one was slightly better than the Ensinor, especially in the coatings.

I kept three 24s - the Konica 2.8/24, the Nikon Nikkor-SC 2.8/24 and this Yashica. I rate them in that order - Konica #1, Nikkor slightly behind it and this Yashica 3rd.

I love the Yashica ML 24/2.8. Has some special rendering. Something magazine-like... I can't explain Smile
