Advice on a wide angle zoom for Sony A7

I'm looking for a nice wide angle zoom for my Sony A7.

I'm considering either a Canon FD 20-35mm f/3.5L or a Tamron SP 20-40mm.

Does anyone have any opinions about either of these lenses or have any suggetions for a useable MF alternative?

I owned a tamron 20-40/2.7-3.5, used it on a Alpha a850, that lens is very sharp - rivals prime lenses. The only issues with that lens - it's prone to flares, and on my a850 it constantly underexposed.

Here you can see a few full-size samples from that lens.

Thanks. That's great.

As a MF alternative you can have a look at the Tamron AD2 (13A) SP 24-48mm f:3.5-3.8.

I'm not able to view them...but I'm pleased to hear about its sharpness.

Well, the 20-40mm would be for all intents and purposes MF. I'd probably get a Nikon mount version with an aperture ring and just adapt it to the A7, but the 24-48mm looks pretty good, too. Not as wide as I imagined, but from those images, I think it would still be a nice lens.

Hmmmm...all these choices. I don't need 20mm at the wide end, but I'd certainly like it if possible. Since all these options are fairly inexpensive, I might have to buy a two or three, compare them, choose the best and then resell the others.

Thanks for all your help!

+1 for the Tammy

Btw. I had Canon 17-40/F4 L on A7 and it was a suprisingly bad performer (considering it's price).
Corners start to be good @F11 @17mm and overall IQ was not very impressive.

Hello Forenseil.Smile
You confirm what photozone writes about the Canon EF 17-40mm F4 L on full-frame Eos sensor :
"The most interesting aspect is naturally the resolution characteristic of a lens and the EF 17-40mm f/4 USM L left mixed impressions here. The problem is, again, the 17mm setting. The center and even the border performance is very high here but there isn't really anything left deserving the word "resolution" in the extreme corners at f/4 and f/5.6. If you require at least a decent corner resolution you should stick to f/11 at this focal length. The lens behaves comparatively harmonious at 28mm and 40mm with generally good to very good figures across the image field and the tested aperture range."

That's why I never wanted one.
Same for the 24-105 F4 L.

Not sure if it helps but here a few results of the Canon FD 20/2.8 SSC on the A7. I doubt you will find a manual zoom with better performance than this fixed lens.

Those images are excellent.

I'm sure that you're right. I'm looking for a decent zoom for backpacking in the mountains of British Columbia and I'd like to avoid changing lenses if possible. But I'll probably end up with a prime lens, too just because. I dream of an Olympus OM 21mm f/2...

There is a Pentax M24-35 that is very small (4.5cm in fact iirc).
I don't know about its performance though, esp on the A7r.
