Hi,

I am curious if Vivitar 90-180 mm F/4.5 Flat Field Zoom AND / OR Tamron SP 70-150mm F/2.8 SOFT are valuable lenses to have in one's portrait tool kit.

I had both, I sold Vivitar after test I see no point to keep it. Tamron 70-150 f2.8 different faster, lighter and soft focus... I still have it, not in pair with best prime lens, but not bad either. Contax and Konica UC both better zooms, but both heavier and bit slower too.

in my world yes to both.

Both are specialty tools that you do not need every day, but if the specific application arises they are useful.

Tell me more about these lenses and why you like them Bernhardas. I am real curious. I was talking to a friend and I mentioned the lenses and he sorta laughed and said just use filters to get the same effect of softening.

I am already sold on the Bokina and while I am pretty sure about the other two, I'd like to hear your opinion on their usefulness.

The question is which is the rarer of the two. The vivitar for many mounts is 500 below. I saw a Konica mount for 200 on ebay. The nikon is 600-800. The soft focus is available now between $350-$600. Which is not likely to be listed again any time soon?

Vivitar is very overprized, don't take it, if you have 500 USD to burn, buy Contax zoom.

I have lots of zooms and yes $500 is over priced. I was buying it for the macro across 90-180 zoom.

I was never happy with any zooms if I had primes in same focal length.
