Tonight we have a cool one. This is my 500mm Cat(Mirror) lens on A7. Contrast isn't stellar so I had to set peaking on high. DOF is really thin but with peaking, it is a lot easier to shoot than I expected. I had really good results with this lens on my APS-C and the results from full frame really blows me away. Although it feels a bit unruly on the A7, it is a load of fun to shoot!

Donuts can be fun - particularly effective on the bubbles and the cactus.
This is a nice lens for full frame. I found it a bit more limited on my NEX 5N, the super light combo was very shaky. Now on my D600 it is much steadier, and with better high ISO's I can use the faster shutter without too much image quality loss (ditto the A7 I imagine).
I particularly like it as a closeup lens - many supertelephotos have a very long minimum focus distance.
As you point out, it is not easy to focus, but either peaking or the Nikon rangefinder dot make this lens a lot more practical than it was. And the fact you can just throw it in your bag without worrying about the weight is a real bonus.

I completely agree with all of your assessments. Additional benefits of using this mirror lens in the modern age is the easiness ISO can be used as a exposure attenuation device. I let my A7's ISO float up to 6400 and the only adjust manually is the focus. At 1/500 secs, I can get very useful shot outside and even marginally useful shots inside.

The resolution of this lens seemed lower on the APS-C comparing to full frame. I figure that is probably normal since the mirror will have very similar resolution across the entire range and increased sensor size helps it look better. It is a lot of fun using this as a pseudo macro.

I prefer this lens on a cropped format. Vignetting is much more strong than on refractive lenses, because the secondary mirror is too small to keep contrast high. And it's unacceptable high on full frame. Because I usually shoot it at ISO at least 800 correcting for vignette produces and uneven noise in the image...especially noticeable at long distance shots when I push contrast because of mist in the air.

It's nice for long reach macro though Smile
