Next stept after Samyang 85/1.4 ?

Hi!
I really like the Samyang. It's sharp, it's cheap, it has smooth bokeh and it's fast.
I use it for potraits when I need thin DOF.
But it's also very heavy, has problems lightsource behind object and it has some CAs under harsh conditions.
What would be the next-best lens between 85-90mm and ~F2?
Is there something lighter and smaller which is optically better?

Sonnar 2.8/85 is certainly smaller and I keep reading that it's every bit as good as the faster version, just slower. It's available pretty cheap sometimes, look for it in Rollei mount to find the cheap ones.

Summicron-M 90/2

As Ian says, the Sonnar 85/2.8 has very good coating and better contrast than the Samyang. I sold my Samyang for the Planar 85/1.4, but that's a bit heavier. Incredible lens though, just stunning.

Make compromise, look f2.8 like TEvidon 70mm f2.8 , Angenieux 75mm , etc cine lenses, they are super small and works well on your NEX.

I thought there has been comparison that showed the Samyang and Zeiss 85 1.4 to be nearly the same?

I had an (elderly) Summicron-M 90/2 and it was imo inferior to the Samyang 85/1.4 (except in build and CA-control maybe)
But more modern models are optically improved as far as I know - I will have a look for them.
90/2.8 Elmarit lenses are also good but I'm not sure about their color rendition.
Apo-Summicron-M 90/2 should be optically the top #1 in this league but it's also very expensive.

Nearly but not completly. Planar is still a little based on what I've seen.

Hmm I think I will keep the Samyang until I get the opportunity to buy an Apo-Summicron or Planar for a very good price.

I had ELmarit 90mm f2.8 second version , Contax is sharper and give more contrast a lot, I rate Leica to Kaleinar 100 level. Worth to try Contax Sonnar you can sell it any time if you wish better one.

Another one to consider is the Rolleinar 2.8/85, it's a rebadged Mamiya in QBM mount, I've never tried one but reports say it is as good as the Sonnar 2.8/85, albeit with a different character.

If only for mirrorless (NEX) then I think the 90mm Voigtlander Apo-Lanthar Leica L39 screw rangefinder version is maybe the unbeatable combination of small size, light weight and high image quality. I have one and am constantly impressed by its quality. Even used on extension bellows it's a wonderful performer.

An 85/2 lens would be less than half the size/weight of the Samyang. It's a big difference between an 85/1.4 and an 85/2. So pretty much any good 85/2 will give you the reduction in size. I am very happy with my Jupiter 9 85/2 in LTM.

I have Pentax S-M-C takumar 85/1.8 and Tamron 90/2.5 for similar shots and can recommend both.
Tamron can also be used as a 1:2 macro lens.

Weight does not only depend on speed - optical design and build is also important. I had Summicron-M 90/2 (a tank) and it was if I remember correctly more heavy and longer than the Samyang.

Optically the best 90mm that I've ever had is Contax-G Sonnar. It's also small and light, so if it weren't Contax-G with inevitable haptics compromise, that would've been a slam dunk. As it is, I prefer C-Elmar to the Sonnar as a small choice and Sigma 90mm f2.8 macro as an all-around choice. I don't think that optical advantage of Sonnar is that big to sweat over it.

Well, yes, you can always make a lens larger and heavier. My point was that by reducing the maximum aperture from f/2 to f/1.4 you can achieve a dramatic decrease in size and weight.

You also make me wonder how large and heavy a Leica 85/1.4 would be.

Yes, if 1.4 not so important, vote for Sonnar 2.8/85/ Love this lens.

I haven't used one for years but I did like the Canon FD 85/1.8. Compared to the Samyang it is smaller and lighter, I thought it pretty good and being FD mount it's not too pricey.
