I made one that does this but for £33 its neater, not to badly priced and possibly worth investing in. The only problem I have with ring flashes of any sort is that they are pretty useless if the front of your lens turns when focusing. My Nikon Kit lens does and my Sony does too.
This one may be ok as the cable seems to have a lot of slack in it.
you could go to www.instructables.com and learn how to make one. _________________ Hero in the 'messin-with-cameras-for-the-hell-of-it department'. Official. |

Phil, thanks but I am far from a mechanically minded- sadly.
The one I linked to runs on only two AA batteries, which I suspect wouldn't last long. Good point on rotating lenses. |

If there was the lubricated frame of a polarising filter (minus its glass) between the LED ring and the filter thread of the lens, would the weight of cable/connector then keep the LED ring still while the end of the lens rotated to focus? |

norland, great idea is an understatement
I might still that one off of you.
Otherwise the beef I have with ring LED lights is that even those from reputable companies come with somewhat poor CRI and those from less reputable/Chinese origin are even worse - color reproduction is a hit and miss, color temperatures doubtful and most cheaper models are not suitable for macro work as at very close distances they lit around the object not at it.
Almost forgot, if used as continuous light source they are a nightmare for closeups - people, especially children, squint uncontrollably - the LEDs are point like over bright and irritable and in flashlike mode metering is almost guesswork and I guess it is a proprietary one. There may be exception, but out of ten or so LED Lights and flashes none met my demands. |

Is there a significant improvement in the performance of multi-LED (double row?)

Btw, noticed that one listed on Amazon warned not to run it continuously for more than ten minutes
-- does that restriction apply to all such ring-lights? |

LEDs are simply not bright enough for macros etc.
Maybe it's strong enough for potraits to produce ring effects in eyes but that's it. _________________ I'm not a collector, I'm a tester

Depends on how many, right? I have a machine vision 128-led ring light that should not be looked at directly.
