I have the fabuleous 38mm. Now I can buy the 40mm for a reasonable price.
Is it worth to upgrade. Some say the 38mm is better.

I have both. Between the two lenses I have, wide open, 38mm is sharper. I have the same dilemma, as I do not see any benefits in 40/1.4 for my type of photography. Others may have different opinion, which I am very interested to hear too.

Well, I just did another comparison of my 38/1.8 and 40/1.4 copies. At F/2.8 my copies are difficult to distinguish from each other. But, as I said, wide open 38/1.8 is sharper. As far as other properties of these lenses go, for me they are both very close. So ... I will keep 38/1.8 and my 40/1.4 will be for sale very soon...

The 38mm covers FF sensor better than 40mm too Wink

ok, 1.8/38 is close to 1.4/40 but these two lenses are very distinct from each other. Both are very sharp from wide open, the 40mm has a harmonious oof rendering while the 38mm has a very distinct and unique, lively oof rendering.

if the price is right I'd certainly get it!

extra sharpness for the 38/1.8, perhaps even stopped down (the 40/1.4 is very sharp), extra bokeh for the 40/1.4. I keep and love both.

Can anynody explain to me why the choice of the single coated 1,8/38 when the 2/35 om multicoated exists?

Thanks.

Pen-F Zuikos are attractive because of their small size and small adapter required. The OM 2/35 is bigger, heavier, needs a bigger adapter, usually goes for about 2 to 3 times the price of the 1.8/38. I believe that the 2/35 is considered the weakest of the famous f2 OMs and most likely @f2 won't be as sharp as the 1.8/38.
Besides the 38mm has a very unique rendering that someone will like, other won't, this is to say it can't be easily interchanged with any other lens.

I bought the 40mm. Gas was too high. i didn't compare it yet directly with the 38mm but first impressions are very good.
38mm is sharper and has more contrast I think/feel.
The 40mm has lovely bokeh and is of course a F.1.4 lens and reasonably sharp at this aperture.
For a lens 50 years old, not bad at all.
Here one wide open :

congrats!
I find the 1.4/40 amazingly sharp @f1.4, possibly more than any of my 1.4/50s and with harmonious bokeh, love the lens!
( and would not agree with those who say that the 38 is sharper wide open resp. @f1.8, consider both very sharp but have never made a 'formal' comparison )
