I watched this video last week when I was finding information of this lens. The radiation of this lens, even though it's still within the safe level, but it's so high compared to the others, almost reaches the limit. Is it Lanthanum? _________________

Quite Boring, as most of us know, way old lenses does have a very slight amount of radiation, because of use from radio active thorium inside the glas elements. That is especially with some old Asashi Pentax Takumar & Super Takumar primes, for instance. But mostly all brands of the time period 60s to 70s had a few "radioactlve" lenses. |

Yes, but so far I have always thought that those lenses would emit weak alpha radiation. As I as understand the video correctly, they have discovered gamma radiation, which would be considerably dangerous. _________________ Personal forum activity on pause every now and again (due to job obligations)!

For instance, not much more than a typical x-ray, what the lens dispenses in about an hour, the radiation levels...but sure, gamma rays are no good for the human body. As for "radioactive" lenses, check out this site:

Naaa, it's all good . . . or mostly good.
You're right about the alpha stuff. It's harmless unless you swallow some.
Gamma radiation from some of our lenses has long been known to exist. It's not a recent revelation. There are other threads here on this forum which discuss the gamma stuff, so that's old news. What made the video work for me was actually seeing the radiation register on the detector. That's more impactful than just writing about it. Clicks speak louder than words.
The gamma radiation from lenses is mostly not a danger as a practical matter. Don't sleep with your lens under your pillow and you'll be just fine! |
