These are lovely shots
I like the third one best as the scenery in which the fireworks took place can be seen clearly on that photo and I find that a plus Smile

Wonderful timing, Yebisu, and the framing is perfect.

Your waterfall photographs were very good! So good that they prompted me to do some research.

Shocked Apparently this lens is very sharp. It's very very underrated from what I have read.

Your images prove the point I think.

The only real issue is distortion, and from what I have read the in-camera firmware (which I have updated on my Nikon D3200) fixes all that up. When I bought the camera I was told to buy just the body. In hindsight that was bad advice! I'm going to buy this lens.

In Japan the 18-55 kit lens option is usually only a little more expensive than the body only so it seemed the obvious choice to go for the kit. I've heard there is some variability in the quality of the kit zooms. Maybe I got a good one. But I'm careful how I use it... usually at f8 with a tripod.

They are made in China. From the reviews I have seen, it's supposedly sharp right through the zoom range, with only a slight drop at 55mm.

In hindsight, an extra $50 would have gotten me the kit lens. Now I will have to pay $100. That's still reasonable if I manage to get a decent copy.

Lovely shots from a very under rated lens. Interesting, parabellumfoto, I have a d3200 and will look for the firmware upgrade. Thanks for the pointer.

I also played with this lens, aswell as the Sony A Kit lens, both Sony E Kit lens, the Sony FE Kit lens and Canon Kit lens.

Optically I would rate them
Sony 28-70 kit lens > Nikon 18-55 = Sony A 18-55 = Canon 18-55 >> Sony E 18-55 > Sony E 16-50
=Large lens means better lens here Wink

The Nikon was very sharp, also at the long end all over the frame. I didn't notice a drop if sharpness at all*

Only on the wide end there are some slight corner problems (CA's, smearing and slighty vignetting in the corners)

*I've also heard that it's worse at the long end but actually I found it to be worse at the short end and sharper (considering the corners) and better corrected at the long end and best in the mid range of about 40mm. I think many of thoose myths are based on people which are testing without having a clue. Testing such a lens indoor without tripod like most people are "testing" their lens would automatically lead to softer images due speed loss and more shaking on the long end - I guess that might be one of the major problems.

Overall I think the Nikon is a very good kit lens. Slightly more CAs than Sony SAL 18-55 but the Nikon is a tiny tad sharper and build feels better. The Canon is a tad softer and had also CA problems stopped down in the mid range as far as I remember (Sony has best CA control). I would rate the Canon a tiny tad inferior to the Nikon and the Sony A but imho neglitable when you have to decide which camera you wan't to buy Wink
Only the Sony E Mount kit lenses are optically rather crappy compared to the DSLR kit lenses, except the new 28-70 Kit which feels subjectivly even better than the APS-C kit lenses or the DSLRs. The old Sony 18-70 Kit is also supposed to be rather crappy aswell; I haven't ever used it though.

Agreed on the value of the Nikkor 18-55mm. I think the version II is slightly better than the first version. It certainly is versatile.
