i was long time in the search for a (good) 400mm lens (for wildlife)
at first i was leaning towards tokina 400mm http://forum.mflenses.com/tokina-sd-400mm-5-6-t57049.html

and at the end i ended up with canon fd 400mm 4.5

this lens is very large, much larger than the canon fd 300mm f4 L

1) F5.6 and 100% crop (almost)

2) F4.5

3)F8 and 100% crop

4) F4.5

5) F8 and 60% crop

Nice looking lens and I bet you get some good results from it. It looks like a bit of a handful; is the tripod mount somewhere near the entre of gravity?

I bought the FD SSC 400/4.5 just to photograph starlings nesting in my garden, but this spring they have not come Sad

Nice pictures here. Great crops !
FYI my own lens came with its dedicated CANON x1.4-A extender, so some of these extenders with the good masking plate are definitely usable.
