I got a new toy for Children's Day Smile Mint condition, with caps and storage tube. 1953 red "P".

I don't have a proper M39 to Nikon adapter, so I used M39-M42 ring with my M42 adapter and ended up in quasi-macro mode.

Some test shots attached, unprocessed apart from RAW-> jpg and some crop.

wide open (not too sharp, but the bokeh is fun)

stopped down

A lovely lens and so sharp stopped down a bit. My copy is not as old as yours but it is my favourite 50. I hadn't thought of using it on my Nikon.

I like the last photo, you really got the detail of the dandelion head. The full aperture brigade could never get a shot like that!

Hope you had a good Childrens Day. My (Polish) wife told me about it.

The dandelion is great, just saw it in the flickr applet and thought "what a well executed shot, I want to do something similar". Congrats.

The shots are very well done but the lens should be sharper than this.

Wide open on my NEX, all my J8s are quite a bit sharper.

100% crop from my 1955 J8:

Wow!

Perhaps my copy will perform better once I mount it properly, not via combined adapters. I will check that out in a few days.

My copy will become soft when focus to close distance with helicoid adapter. Use a mirror-less camera if you want to infinity focus as this RF lens will not focus far on your Nikon SLR.

Very nice looking early copy.

I have a later version that does not come with a focusing knob. It holds up pretty well on digital:

Now I have a normal M39-Nikon adapter and I'm confused...

M42 and M39 mounts have the same register. My other 50mm M42 lenses let me focus to about 1-1,5 metres with the no-glass adapter.

With the Jupiter I can only get as far as 20 cm. Could anyone please help with an explanation? I'm hopeless with the technical stuff.

your assumption that M42 has same register distance as M39 is not correct. yes, there are some SLR cameras which have M39 thread and same register distance as M42 (45.46mm), but "M39" is generaly considered as Leica M39 thread with register distance of 28.8 mm. this applies to rangefinder lenses - which Jupiter 8 is Wink that means, you won' t reach infinity on SLR.

Lena. Without too much technical numbers:

This is M42 adapter for Olympus DSLR:

This is M42 adapter for Nikon DSLR:

As you can see, for M42 adapters for Nikon and Olympus DSLR are thin, Nikon is even thiner.

This is adapter for M42 for Olympus PEN (OM-d, EPL-1...):

If you use M42 lens on PEN, the adapter is --2cm biger than for DSLR. So betwen DSLR and PEN, there is about 2cm free betwen the lens and camera.
But, if you check M39 adapter for PEN:

you can see that is again thin, so you are missing those 2cm, so you can't mount this lens on DSLR, because you have to put this lens about 2cm inside the DSLR body for normal operation. Of course, you can't do this. There is a miror inside Smile
That is why you can't use m39 on DSLR. the adapter have to be 2cm shorter than the adapter for M42. The adapter for M42 is few mm thick, so no way for this. You are losing infinity and distance. Only close focus.

Same if you put M42 lens on your dslr 2cm away from the camera - you have macro ring.

Hope it is clear. Very Happy

FWIW, I have seen some people using LTM or L39 to refer to the rangefinder mount and M39 to refer to the Zenit SLR mount.

You are right Laurentiu.
L39 for "Leica" type rangefinders.
Lena's Jupiter-8 comes from a soviet rangefinder, such as a Zorki-3 or Zorki-4. These cameras' design directly come from Leica cameras.
These cameras have shorter register distance than the reflex cameras.

Lena, your Jupiter-8 will work very fine when mounted on a 4/3 camera such as an Olympus Pen or a Panasonic G with a l39/M43 adapter.
When mounted on a reflex dslr, it only gives a very good macro lens.

There are M39 lenses made for reflex cameras. For instance I have an old Jupiter-6 2.8/180mm in M39 mount.
I adapt it on my 5D with a simple step up screw ring 39mm to 42mm, then a M42 to Eos adapter.
