I have just snagged this lens and the aperture is stuck wide open.

Before I get to work on it I would just like to check that there isn't some secret way of setting the aperture. The are two lugs at the filter end which are on opposite sides, but squeezing them together doesnt seem to help any.

Here is the lens

I would think that the two tabs are for opening and closing the aperture. The f stop may possibly be set by pulling and turning/pushing and turning the aperture ring such as on CZJ lenses?

+1. The preset lens rarely has stuck aperture problem unless the ring are totally frozen. Try to push/pull the ring above the two lugs and turn it in either direction.

There is about 1mm of rotational play but thats it.

Pulling (like preset Biotar) doesnt work

Most of my Schneider lenses has problem with aperture. except from you Mos Wink
Usually it's coil wire is not strong anymore to pull the aperture
Sorry I dont know the right word

Coil wire = spring. Smile

I look forward to your results with it John because I have bee after one of these for a while after finding my Tele-Xenar 4/135 to be really great.

Did you manage to get it fixed? I sometimes wish I had hung on to that lens for use with my Exa.

Thanks all, looks like its screwdriver time. Easy enough to fix

@Ian

Something to taste till I can get deeper focus (Canon Portrait setting)

Cheers John, that looks excellent, just like the 4/135.

Good luck, they come along from time to time, mine is an old 1950s one in Diax mount, I adapted it to work on my NEX.

I suspect that the knob on the aperture ring is a lock for the preset mechanism, so the limit stays at the preselected aperture. It seems like it may be locked wide open. It may be working just fine except that the lock needs to be wiggled in just the right way to free the aperture limit.

Horrible day here today, cloudy and raining, but I snapped a couple of shots with the 4/135 to show you what a good lens it is. No PP, just RAW-JPEG then resize for web.:

Great Lens!

How does the 3.5/135 compare?, is it a different recipe?

PostPosted: Wed Aug 14, 2013 10:07 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

I expect it's just an updated version with the same formula, but I don't actually know.

The early 3.5/135 is in 4e/3g and the later one are 5e/4g or 5e/5g(QBM version). I cannot find the diagram of 4/135 but from the reflection of my 4/135, it should be a four elements telephoto design.

Yes, I think it's the classical 4/3 tele-tessar design. I've not been able to find a diagram either.
