Amazing result! Could you please post the setup you used for this pic? I know - by the net - the elements sepaated: star-shaped cardboard, the lensbaby itself... Did you use a close-up lens or other with it?

BTW, the other day I tried out the hand-driven lens hood I learned from you: much less flare than without it, i must say, thanks,

Cheers,

Renato

Welcome!

The set up was very simple. And all commercial elements no Mc Gyvering involved.

Just the composer with double glass lens (you can get a range of different lenses for the lens babys).
The aperture for the simple lenses is a metal disk with the fitting hole. There is a set of "Creative" disks in pre-cut shapes and some "blank" disks where you can cut your own. However this was the pre-cut star shape. It is difficult to guess the aperture but might have been something between 2.8 and 4.

I also used the pop up flash of the camera otherwise the flowers would be rather black shapes.

Nice, Thank You!

Renato

I did not think that the Lensbaby (double glass) lens would be as sharp in the in focus spot.

Nice! The reason why it's sharp is because your cut-out aperture effectively amounts to stopping down the aperture, which gets rid of the worst of mis-corrected spherical aberrations and other defects; given that even the crappiest of lenses become sharp stopped down, it's not surprising the Lensbaby does too.

I do this frequently with Helios 77M-4 which I got my hands on a very cheap one because the aperture was broken (which was perfect for what I wanted to do; the glass in 77M is great). The entire back group unscrews in one piece giving easy access to the aperture plane without needing to even unscrew the mount, so it's easy to insert cardboard and screw it back together. As pointed out by forum members before I think the 44Ms are similar too and equally fantastic for this purpose. Might be cheaper than a Lensbaby...
