I'm at it again! A couple of nice little parcels arrived today. Smile

#1 Pentax SMC K 3.5/28

#2 Pentax SMC K 1.4/50

I succumbed after seeing hoanpham's and Jeff Zen's great landscapes with the 28. The 50 came mounted on a K2 camera in almost perfect condition, needing only new seals and a good clean.

These lenses are bulkier and heavier than the Takumar and M versions, with 52mm filters. I haven't had a chance to take any pics with them yet.

Congrats.
The K 50/1.4 is a very good build and optical very good. I like it better than M and A 50/1.4.
K 28/3.5 is razor sharp andperfect for landscape. Try f8-f11, on my K5, it is at pixel level.

Hello Peter,
grats on the the 28/3.5

According to Yoshihiko Takinami and many others, it is the best among the Pentax 28's:

You can find some opinions on Pentax manual lenses here, too:

Thankyou Rino & hasan

I bought these really for historical reasons as I want to use them primarily on the K2 camera they were designed for, but the chart in hasan's link indicates the K3.5/28 has slightly better resolution than the M version, so on that score I'll probably consider selling my M3.5/28 and M2.8/28 and use it exclusively. I'm not a fan of scientific tests but I need to compare these three 28s before I decide. The 50's are incomparable and need no charts! Smile

has anyone tested those against say Hexanons? I´m into some comparisons recently, only Japanese stuff, but lacking Pentax.
Used to own a K 1000 with 2,0/55 years ago, really loved the pics. They had something special, like fine and contrasty.

I`m so jealous of the 28...Really want one myself.

Nice! would love a SMC 1.4.

Can't comment on the 28 but this 24 of mine is really nice Smile

First of all, congrats! Excellent buys and you will enjoy them.
I have two of the 28mm s- the f 2.8 (M) and the f3.5(M).

The 2.8 is a fine lens and is sharp enough. Excellent for streets.

The 3.5 however is just brilliant. Place it at f 5.6 (or a half stop smaller) and you need not bother to focus it!! Nothing could be simpler. Marvelous colors and contrast and excellent colors.

smc Pentax M 28mm f3.5 (wide open)

smc Pentax M 28mm f3.5 (wide open)

All the best with the new lenses.

I took it away with me on a short holiday to the Isle of Wight, to give it a run. It is certainly sharp and a fantastic lens for landscapes, just what I need it for, and it seems to love working with the NEX-7. These are taken at f8 ISO100 on the Fine (jpg) picture quality setting (3000x1680). No PP whatsoever. Please click for full size versions to see how sharp they really are.

Wonderful pics from India, Arijit, thank you for adding them. I love looking at pictures from places I've never visited, I would love to go there one day. Where were they taken?

Both - great lenses! I like the M 50 1.4 more though for the one idea smoother bokeh.

Thanks Carsten. I'm delighted with the 28 on the NEX. It seems to give me confidence that the photographs are going to be good no matter what mistakes I make! Smile

Well, that lens doesn't have the field of view of the 28! Smile

Ah, sorry, I should have realised what you meant. I haven't really tried the K50 properly yet, I find I don't use 50 lenses on APS-C much. I have the Pentax-M 50/1.7 on my ME Super and this one will live on my K2 when it returns from CLA.

Peter, your landscape are sharp and details.
Seems like the nex7 handles this lens very good.

I used to adjust my shots with nex5 with dynamic level 5 to give a kind of weak hdr which should be the base to PP.

Ive had both lenses for several years ( actually I have most of the smc k series ). While the smc k 50/1.4 is really good, the
28/3.5 is truly stellar. Outstanding resolution, contrast, and rendering. I love mine and use it over the F2 version which I also have. Very Happy

Thankyou, that's good to know. I was quite surprised when I looked at the range of the K series lenses. I don't remember them very well when they were being produced in the 70s - any new equipment was way beyond my dreams in those days. When I could finally afford to replace my Praktica, the Pentax-M range had been on the market for a few years and I went for an ME Super and skipped over the K range. Now I have the K2 and a couple of K lenses I'm beginning to feel I made a mistake back then.

Both 28 3.5(K and M) have this magical aperture F11 where they are really sharp without any CA with great colors and contrast. I had M 28 3.5 but changed it with the M 28 2.8 II because of the sharper center wide open(for macro).

I used to be an exclusive Pentax M42 user but later switched to the bayonet lenses. Since the M42 were so superb mechanically I never reallly liked the M or A series as they are mechanically inferior to the K series ( I have a few though). What I did find out in the long run was that not only are the K series mechanically the best, in many cases they are also optically the best probably due to excellent mfg tolerances and quality control of the mid 70's. As such, I now have nearly all of the smc K series and really enjoy using them on my Pentax DSLR Very Happy

Thanks Peter. These were from Kolkata- in fact from my neighborhood in the South East Part of the City.

Please do visit India sometime... photographically it will be a feast! Trust me.
