Well i had previously posted on this forum about a jupiter8 lens in LTM mount starting with serial no "0". it was later found out to be not any special version( PT3090-http://www.sovietcams.com/index.php?-483601546),it was produced somwhere between 68-1970s. Sad Sadly the lens i got

had a severely scratched front element ,it looked like someone used sandpaper to clean the front element,so it was unusable .So i was looking for another J8 with hopefully better front element . but couldnt find one with good elements in m39 mount!!
After lot of searching tracked down a jupiter8M in kiev mount

now though it is written 53/2 on the faceplate i gave it a shot replacing the front element!!
Took it to my lens repair guy ,thus both lenses were dismantled but i found out that the elements are quite different specially the 2nd optical block and the last optical block. but as the lens in m39 mount had only problemn with the front element i thought it could be transplanted .Well after putting the elemt in the older J8(m39 mount) i was in for a shock ,the diameter of the front elemnt of the newer J8M was larger by a few mm may be 1mm or 0.5 mm,sadly the element didnt completely fit into the slot ,but i told my repair man to give it a go anyway ,so the front ring was tightened to the max possible without breaking the element!!! then I took some shots so here are they.............
First few comparison shots at different apertures

100%CROP of last comparison image

now some standalone shots at F/2 ,All shots are SOOC in jpg from sony nex3 ,only resized & auto toned in photoshop

Iam quite satisfied with the performance ,previously the lens would flare badly with the heavyly scratched front element ,only one con to this transplantation is that as the front element didnt properly fit in the slot and is somewhat lifted, the lens dosent reach infinity until f4 after f4 it reaches infinity .

I found this out the hard way as well- that the front elements are different. Same between the earlier 1950s J-8 and later 1960s J-8, the diameter of the optics changed even amount the screwmount versions. The Jupiter-3: front elements are interchangeable from 1950 through to the end of the line.

They are not so different that the lens is not usable with a mirrorless camera. The focal length changes slightly, but unless you want to use on a Rangefinder camera, you do not need to be too close.

My ultimate "Franken-Lens" is a Canikkor 50/1.5, RF coupled across the full focus range. It is made out of a Canon 50/1.5 and a Nikkor 5cm F1.4, set in a Canon focus mount, and calibrated for a Leica.

No chance of using with RF camera cause to much hassle as Film is not really available here!!! so iam happy with the converson, now if i can get hold of someone with a precision lathe i mighy get the slot machined so that it can accommodate the element fully!!!
put Up shots with the " Canikkor 50/1.5 " Laughing

How I do it: use a rounded file in a circular motion to bore out the fixture. The J-8 optical fixture has a "ridge" cut in it, "Like" a Leica Summicron 5cm F2. On the latter lens, I replaced the front element of a 1950s lens with one from a later batch- the diameter was 0.5mm wider. I used the circular file to "bore out" the fixture to place the element. If you look at the J-8 fixture, you'll see what to do.

I'll get some links to the Canikkor for mflenses, I have a thread on it here:

http://www.leicaplace.com/f34/canikon50mm-f1-5-ltm-mount-lens-113/

The spacing between the front and rear groups was done by "eyeballing" close-up and 20m. It worked out.
