I bought a working slide projector at the carboot on sunday - just waiting for a couple of mags. But meanwhile I looked at the lens. Putting it in front of my Nikon it seems that the back focus is quite deep. Not even going into the mount of my camera. Although I'd use it on my NEX I made a simple mount for my Nikon - it can be adapted later.
The focusing mount was simple. Sorry no photos of this procedure. I greased up the barrel of the lens and laid a thin rope of Epoxy putty inside the helical. I the wrapped more epoxy putty round the rope and about an inch of the barrel . When the putty was almost set I twisted the barrel of the lens and screwed it back and forth a bit to 'set' the helical.
I removed the lens and smoothed off the ends of the helical. I found a reversing ring and glued the helical mount onto it, it was just wide enough to allow the lens to go past infinity into the lens mount. Thats it, job done. The lens focuses perfectly. I made an outer barrel from an old fish-food container and glued that over the helical. I tidied it up with some tape and camera leatherette.
On the camera:
photos taken with the D3200, just auto contrast applied nothing else.
It was way better than I imagined it would be. There is a little softening in the corners, but I reckon it would be nice for portraits. _________________ Hero in the 'messin-with-cameras-for-the-hell-of-it department'. Official. |

A T2 mount, some sink waste pipe and lots of tape is the answer to your prayers here. Take the inner out of the T2 mount and the pipe - about 5 inches long - will fit nicely inside. Tape it to the mount, wrap tape around the lens thread so it's a nice fit in the pipe and trombone it for focus.
We expect pictures shortly. _________________ LENSES & CAMERAS FOR SALE.....

It is just too wide for waste pipe. I tried that. But my home made helical works fine.
helical
waste pipe
yeah, I chopped a bit off the end of the lens as the mount didnt seat correctly and the flange gets in the way _________________ Hero in the 'messin-with-cameras-for-the-hell-of-it department'. Official. |

Nice work and the lens looks excellent indeed. I have been on the lookout for a Schneider AV-Xenotar 2.4/90 or a Leitz Colorplan 2.5/90 for a while, or something similar, I'm going to hack it up so I can use it with a shutter on my 6x9 Graphic. _________________ I don't care who designed it, who made it or what country it comes from - I just enjoy using it! |

This Projar is a great lens. I took it out with me this afternoon while shopping and grabbed these snaps. I'm pleased and surprised with the results. No PP apart from auto contrast
Yeah, yeah my day to day bike is deliberately rusty. Less stealable _________________ Hero in the 'messin-with-cameras-for-the-hell-of-it department'. Official. |

Very nice Phil.
I just fund a Rollei Vario-Projar 70-120, which is made by ISCO so one is yours if you want it. _________________ I don't care who designed it, who made it or what country it comes from - I just enjoy using it! |

Thanks for the offer Ian, I have enough 'experimental' lenses that I don't use
However, when I get the projector up and running - awaiting a couple of mags - I may need a zoom lens. I'll get back to you. Thanks! _________________ Hero in the 'messin-with-cameras-for-the-hell-of-it department'. Official. |

Thanks OH, I must admit I was surprised when I looked at the first results.
I think you'd figure a way to focus one if you wanted to. I will probably make a mount for my M42 focusing system, but this works just fine, a little coarse but not too bad.
My favourite materials for 'Messin' with cameras for the hell of it' are: Epoxy resin, Epoxy putty, my file, an endless supply of reverse adapters, bits of tubing and matt black paint.
Regards my background; I was a dental technician, working in wax, acrylic, metal and ceramics, Dabbling in a bit of jewellery on the side. In addition I was a 'technical consultant' for many BBC and ITV shows in the 80's and 90's that needed specialised materials and skill to create effects. I created a body found in a ditch*, an abscess on an elephant's leg and a hot wire polystyrene cutter. I hold 4 patents for dental products: A universal lubrication and sterilising stand for high speed turbines, an electronic root canal gauge and pulp sensor, and an improved bitewing holder. And one for a Cokin accessory that was made redundant before it even hit the market when micro video cameras appeared.
other stuff too but I'm too modest to say...
My perfect job would be working on 'Mythbusters' and creating all that stuff! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MythBusters _________________ Hero in the 'messin-with-cameras-for-the-hell-of-it department'. Official. |

straight from camera, sun i front of me and about 45deg to my left hence little contrast

A couple more straight from cam no pp or anything
I found the focus a little coarse and sticky. I will use this setup more so I am going to adapt it to my M42 focusing system. _________________ Hero in the 'messin-with-cameras-for-the-hell-of-it department'. Official. |

I just found some pictures of my tape-n-tube projector lens creation. Mine was all tape and waste pipe with the outer part of a T2 adapter. The lens is a Projar 2.8 / 85
I did have to trim a bit off the lens tube to get it close enough to the K10 to get infinity.
I've just adjusted the levels slightly, the shadows were a bit dark. It's not a bad lens.
