Vivitar 70-210mm/3.5 macro (Nikon AI mount on Canon 30D)

I just got this lens this week...I am pleased with this lens's color and contrast...
...here are some shots...the eagle is at "near" 100% crop...maybe 90%....shot at F8, the deer @ 5.6

The long throw of this lens's focusing barrel makes it more difficult to focus than Nikkors with shorter rotation range of their focus barrel...on a Nikon it may be easier because you focus @ wide open, whereas on Canon (with adapter) you focus at the set aperture that is both darker and has more depth of focus...

Still, I got a decent percentage of keepers....it will take some practice to get better...of course.....

100% crop

Beautiful catches, does the serial start out with 22 or 28?

This is the HEAVY 1st version, serial #22...., made by KIRON...
...it's heavier than the Nikon 300/4.5....and certainly much more than the Canon EF 70-210/3.5-4.5 AF...

...but it IS MF, and I like that...smooth focusing is nice...next week I'll work on the Macro end...

To be clear, it was made by Kino Precision Ltd. Kiron was a short-lived US marketing company set up to sell Kino-made lenses. Kiron as a brand had nothing to do with Vivitar.

In any event, an excellent lens and fine examples.

Thanks frenched for that information...

I had read this on Flickr...about this lens...

"The first edition was designed by Vivitar (Ellis Betensky of NASA Optics fame)..."

I'm currently having an affair with my copy of this great lens, we go out together most days now. Laughing

Great pictures. Cool

I've got this lens as well (the Kino version that is). Absolutely great for how cheap it is (or I got it: 25$ incl leather case). One of the few lenses I wouldn't consider selling. Definitely one of the better vintage telephoto zoom lenses around!

TijmenDal:

This is the 1st PRE-AF zoom lens I've shot with...always was a prime lens shooter...and it is indeed very nice...A TANK, THOUGH!

I'll share the love for the Vivitar S1. Cool

I take a lot of detail, close shots and the Vivitar is great for this. I always have a monpod with me which helps a lot.

The colours in this are real, there was a magnicent sunset but I was deep in the woods and could only capture the light as it streamed through the trees.

Lloyd...like your sight...
Yes, this lens seems very real in rendering nature...colors, contrast are very pleasing...impressive

Took mine for a quick walk around the pond earlier. It was so flipping hot and humid only the insects were out.

Both are SOOC with a big crop. No macro, just standing about 10 feet away at 210mm and f/5.6. I missed the eyes on the damselfly but, hey, happy to get anything with this swelter and overcaffeinated hands.

As a long walkabout lens, it's hard to beat!

+1

I named it the Versitar because of it's versatility, a wonderful lens for numerous situations.

Funny, you and I were responding at the same moment. . .

Well, it's high quality and very versatile. Hard to take it off the camera because it's great for so many opportunities, from macro shots to birds-in-flight. Not yet in SonicScot's league in the latter category but I'm working on it!

I have it and love it... This lens is a permanent keeper for me!

Mine has a nikon F mount and is working perfectly with my old 35mm F90X body, but didn't use that body for last 5 years.

Razz

I have the second version made by Tokina. Is the least of all heavy, but is heavy. This is the only problem. Everything else is kindness. Is a outstanding lens from 70 to 200. I have not seen many examples of focus to infinity.

Why wait? Head over to eBay and order an EMF adapter for your 30D from Big_IS and get going!

Oh, I've plenty of Big_IS Nikon adapters for the Canon....I was just saying that THIS lens will go with me when "take the walk on the dark side"...
The only lens I'm sorry can't go with me will be the Oly 24/2.8...that lens is better than the Nikon I had had...
