I have four copies of this lens now.
Two Nikkor-S (the first seven element type), which I am collecting, and a beaten up AI as well as another AI that's in near mint condition.
Superb colour, sharpness and rendition in these samples. _________________ Minolta MC Rokkor f1.4 50mm

If the Nikkor-S has 7 elements in 5 groups, and the AI has a 6/4 arrangement, then surely we have two different lenses ? _________________ John |

One very valuable source of detail information on nikon lenses is here http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/serialno.html
I am sure many member know it already.
According to the serial number information around 1.1 million non AI and roughly 880 thousand AI and AIS were manufactured.
I guess that number is large enough so that it will remain affordable, despite its very nice image quality. |
According to the link the 50/2 AIS was never made. Nikon quickly moved on to the 50/1.8. _________________ John |

Correct, but if it had been Ai converted by Nikon (as opposed to a home made one like mine) then it would be possible to have one. The new parts would match the barrel of the old lens. _________________ Hero in the 'messin-with-cameras-for-the-hell-of-it department'. Official. |

The Nikkor-S 5cm F2 is an early attempt at a Normal lens for an SLR camera. It is a retrofocus design, with a negative front element. Lower contrast, not as good as the Nikkor-H 50/2 that replaced it. Only a few thousand of the Nikkor-S 5cm F2 made. Nikkor-S The 5.8cm F1.4 is the "other" Nikon normal lens that is also uncommon. The latter is almost like a Summarit in design. |
