Hi !
I'm looking for a lens that has a creamy and full circles bokeh expecially for portrait.
At the same time I try sharpness and beautiful colors
Actually, I have NEX C3 camera, so I'll buy a adapter.
I'ld like to obtain results like these:
Can you suggest me some lens ?
I'm reading informations about helios 44, oreston (50mm is good or only 100mm ?) and rokkor mc 50 1.7
I'ld like to know if exist a Zeiss family lens with this bokeh type.
Budget: about 150 €, used lens
P.S. Leica Summicron is totally out of my budget.
Thx to all
Regards

The Pen f 38mm can obtain similar bokeh results.
But it may be shorter than you want. It also depends a lot of the scene/ background ++

I've had a tough time getting good swirly bokeh with several different Helios 44s on a crop sensor camera (60D in my case). Most people who get swirly bokeh with Helios are using full frame. It may not be easy on NEX either. You can imagine cropping the image by 1.5 in your picture, it wouldn't be nearly as dramatic.

That kind of circular effect is often thought of as "bad" so I would steer clear away from Zeiss. You're more likely to get it from el cheapo Russian lenses IMHO. _________________ Canon EOS 6D | Canon EOS 60D | Canon EOS-M | Voigtlander Nokton 1.4/35 | Zeiss Distagon C-Y 4/18 | Zeiss Distagon ZF 2/28 | Samyang 1.4/35 | Zeiss Planar C-Y 1.4/50 | Zeiss Planar C-Y 1.4/85 | Zeiss Makro-Planar C-Y 2.8/100 | Zeiss Sonnar C-Y 2.8/135 | Nikkor ED Ai-S 2.8/180 | Canon FD SSC Fluorite 2.8/300 | Tair-3S 4.5/300 |

Zeiss Biotar is an obvious answer. Although none of the pictures you've shown has what most would consider "creamy" bokeh. A preset or semi-auto CZJ Tessar will also give you those circles, but with less swirly effect. |

Helios 77M4 Bokeh on Nex-3,similar bokeh can be done with Other helios 44,Helios 40,Meyer primoplan 58/1.9 , Zeiss Biotar 58/2 of which helios is a copy!! But if you need extreme swirl then invest in C mount lens, like fujian etc!!! _________________ Cameras-Point and shoot- Powershot A590IS Mirroless-SONY NEX-3

So, I'm considering Zeiss Pancolar or Biotar.
Someone can give me experience about bokeh and sharpness ?
I already own a planar 50 f1.4. For this reason, you advise me to stay away from Zeiss Pancolar?
thx to all

Probably the best combination of image quality, bokeh and price for portraits that I know is Minolta Rokkor 58/1.2. Shot wide open into the light you will also get lovely flare as a bonus! And stopped down a little it will give circles similar to above. |

If you want images like the ones posted in this thread the Biotar is a much better bet than the Pancolar. The Pancolars give a much, much smoother OOF rendering than the Biotar except when shot wide open:

Remove the rear cell from a Helios-44 then mount it on approx 38mm of extension tubes and you have a 116mm triplet that swirls like crazy wide open.
Triplets like the Domiplan, Meritar and Trioplan also swirl wide open. _________________ I don't care who designed it, who made it or what country it comes from - I just enjoy using it! |

The domiplan is bit more noticeable, also with harsher bright lining on highlights. |

Most of 50/2 lenses I tried can do that. The key is you have to find the right background. in this case, Trees. we in here call it "Bokeh pohon" meaning Tree bokeh.
The technique is simple. our aim is not the sharp one in center. 'cause we want this kind of bokeh. so first of all, find the bokeh you want while focusing. if you already find it. then put someone or a thing as main object in center.
oh btw, maybe you want to know the lenses. as far I remember, Yashica ML 50/2, pancolar 50/2, all helios 58/2, nikon 50/2 etc. _________________ nex5, Olympus EPM1, yashica half 14, Canon eos 650 want to see samples of mine? please click My lenses

Great suggestions so far. You may also want to try some enlarging lenses, they are quite inexpensive. I have gotten some good results with a vintage 90mm f/4.5 Enlarging Ektar, but other similar types should also work. Check out this post:
