Hi Folks, of course one is an SLR lens and the other a rangefinder, I am asking if there is difference in optical formula, glasses used and performance? Anyone has the relevant charts, other info?

Cheers!

Daniel

You'll certainly find the details you want in Erwin Puts' book "Leica Compendium". I think the text (but not the MTF charts) is still available on-line somewhere, although it's now vanished from his website. On page 550 of the 3rd edition, November 2011, he states that optically the two lenses are identical. The Leica website should have the MTF chart for the rangefinder version.

Thanks Stephen. I actually have both now (since writing that post) and can test them both on a crop sensor (would be neat to have the new M with the adapter, but can't afford it). The M is up for sale but it will be easier to let it go knowing that the R version is a perfect replacement. It was a newer lens and I thought the boys at Leica may have thought up new tricks... but the M version is plenty good.

One weakness of most Leicas is shooting into the sun and point light sources (coma?). Not too good with that...
