It's actually an MTO 500mm, which is reasonably common. Search for those keywords and you'll find far more info
I found it decent, but big and heavy! _________________ Graham - Moderator

Sure, but I've bookmarked the link now, there's really no reason for it to stay there...
I wonder how the MTO would compare to my Celestron 80/400 for moon shots. _________________ Sony: A7 | Samyang FE 35/2.8 | Sony FE 85/1.8

Quite mysterious that they continued the production of those MTO (since 1957), whereas in 1960 they created the MTOM, which is way more compact and lighter (see here). It also perform quite good. This MTOM never was produced in large production, only prototypes. _________________ Pierre

I heard it has not only a nasty scratch on the front element, but also mirror-separation and sticky aperture blades! |

Actually, the MTOs (MTO-500 and MTO-1000) were only predecessors of a whole range of Soviet/Russian Maksutov's mirrow lenses that had manufactured in the production quantities (MTOM did not, as it was an experimental model only). You can see that little (and not very little ) beauties here http://oly43club.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=88&st=0
Hope, you will find this info useful. |
