Hi. I am looking for suggestions on a good portrait lens which isn't to expensive to use on my Canon 40D via an adapter. I currently have a Nikon F-mount adapter and an olympus OM mount adapter and I am looking into getting an M42 adapter as well. I recently picked up a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 for $30 on ebay but I don't think that is a long enough focal length to be a good portrait lens. I have a gap in my lens arsenal to fill between 50mm and 100mm so I was looking at possibly an 85mm of some sort. However I'm open to a 105mm or 135mm as well. I'm hoping for something with at least a f3.5 aperture but I would prefer a f2.8 or f2. Can anyone make some recommendations for a good portrait lens in one of the mounts I mentioned that will produce very sharp pictures. I'm looking for something that is reasonably cheap and I don't want to spend more than $150USD so I'm trying to get the best bang for my buck. Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum ...

What about a Jupiter-9 ? It's a fine lens, not too much expensive (between 90 and 100$), it is an 85mm f/2 and it is an M42 lens, so it should be easily adaptable to your camera ...

Do a search in the forum, there are a lot of good samples ...

Cheers

Thanks I'll keep an eye out for these, especially the nikkor 85mm and the Jupiter-9. Its a real bummer because I actually used to have the nikkor 105mm f2.5 and after I switched to digital I loaned it to a friend of mine along with my old film camera and I don't think they ever really got into photography and used it. Unfortunately I have moved away and lost touch with this friend so I may never get it back and now that I've discovered adapters and how fun it can be to use MF lenses on DSLRs I really want to use it again.
