I don´t like zoom lenses, but I think many photographers would be happy to have faster zoom lenses.
Would be very interessting to see the quality of these prototypes. _________________ Camera modification, repair and DIY - some links to look through: http://www.4photos.de/camera-diy/index-en.html

Like most Tokina lenses, very soft at widest aperture. |

Oh, I read very good things about the ATX 90 Macro, I had good experiences with the 60-300, and I think even the 80-200/2.8 was not bad (only few short tests made). _________________ Camera modification, repair and DIY - some links to look through: http://www.4photos.de/camera-diy/index-en.html

Most probably. Otherwise they would have released a lens like that for a crop sensor. Instead, they made a 50-135/2.8. _________________ List of lenses |

I believe they actually elected to make them constant-aperture, instead.. which explains the AT-X 35-70mm f/2.8 and AT-X 60-120mm f/2.8 zooms. _________________

Sorry, but I can't agree with this.....
Most Tokina AT-X lenses are not very soft at the widest aperture. In fact, much of the AT-X range are quite the opposite. The most common failing with Tokina lenses is the CA, which luckily pairs very nicely with Nikon DSLRs which have auto CA correction.
I have a number of Tokina AT-X lenses, and most are very nice. The MF ones include:
Tokina AT-X 80-200mm F2.8
Tokina AT-X 60-120mm F2.8
Tokina AT-X 24-40mm F2.8 (not so sharp at F2.8 )
Tokina AT-X 12-24mm F4 (AF lens)
The older Tokina AT-X 35-200mm (this one is older and just ok)
Tokina 80-210mm F4-5.6 (slow but sharp) |

I had also read the info on a photokina review
PERHAPS (it is a supposition) the 35-70 2.8 production model is based on the same optical design than the prototype 2/2.5 but with stop compensation at fixed 2.8 for better optical quality (and not too softness wide open !)
Do not forget than 99% of 35-70 3.5 lenses are in fact 2.5/3.5 lenses with stop locked to 3.5 for better iq (except tefnon 2.5/3.5 lens sold as soligor, access.. and angenieux 2.5/3.3)
Idem for 60-120mm 2.8 production model _________________ OM USER .. I KEEP/USE:
