I have a 645 welta folder which has been lying around for the past 15 years. I got it cheaply and was not satisfied with the front focusing (suspect it is off). I've been trying to try to adapt it for other camera (nikon 35mm mount) but was not successful the first few times.

Goals
- achieve infinity focus
- bypass the front focus (since it is suspected to by faulty).
- no messing around with super/crazy glue, cement etc , has to be a "clean" solution.

That leaves out bellows -- with the rear focus of a 75mm , not much room left .

The lens ....

The rear mount is a 30mm thread (not a standard copal size though).
Mananged to find a 30->52mm filter step ring that fits (after some filing) ....

Added a 52mm->42mm ring ...

With M42 helcoid and M42->nikon adater....

On the camera

While the example is on a 35mm camera, one can mount any LF lens in a similiar way to the M42 helcoid , and mount the setup on a lomo, diy camera etc ...

Near Infinity test 1 (f4.5) ... brick wall . ZERO processing, straight out of DSLR .

100% Crop .

Near Inifinity test 2 (f4.5) ... details . again zero processing.

100% Crop

Max closeup -- front focusing extended max, and helicoil extended max ...

Front focus at Infinity, helicoil at max extension.

I will use the front focus as a "softness" selection, infinity == 0 softness/glow, and decreasing focus will increase the softness/glow ....

With bellows, this setup becomes a macro lens ....

eg...

Creative, and a neat job. It looks good on the FE2. And the results are excellent

Straight out of cam the images are low contrast (expected of a ~1936 non-coated lens).
Stopped down to f8, and with some curve correction in PS, the lens gives excellent results (as seen in the closeup, with bellows).

Excellent results, the macro shots where you've processed the image are fantastic.

I know a junk shop with a selection of beat-up folders in the back, I may need to have a try at this!

As a technical exercise...ah get it

As a desire to re-use an old lens...ah get it

As a macro with bellows, results look fine.

But it's failed tae reach the goals you set? Cool

It looks cool on the end of the Nikon but that's not the purpose, is it? If it doesn't perform as a lens? Cool

If you want to get it working on the folder -

Its really quite easy to reset infinity on these German front cell focus cameras.

The secret is to make a plastic groundglass that fits in the film gate - i.e., piece of clear plastic cut to fit, the side towards the lens sanded with fine sandpaper.

Tape it in the film gate.

Focus the front cell until you get infinity on the groundglass.

Loosen the setscrews on the front cell bezel and turn it so the infinity indicator is in the right place. Re-tighten the setscrews.

Goals review:

- achieve infinity focus --> Yes, focuses to infinity on a nikon mount .
- bypass the front focus (since it is suspected to by faulty). --> Yes with the helicoid on nikon mount
- no messing around with super/crazy glue, cement etc , has to be a "clean" solution. --> Yes, no super/crazy glue (or cement) used and I can always remount it back to the folder .

The setup is also used for mounting my el-nikkors (39mm screw mount) onto nikon mount while still maintaining the above 3 goals (just remove the czj, 30->52, 52->42 and replace with el-nikkor, 39->42 ).

Another use is to try out UV photography using non-coated lens (as well as el-nikkor) ....
