Is it really a rectangular diaphragm or some modification?

It really has a rectangular diaphragm. You can create your own bokeh using this way. http://www.diyphotography.net/diy_create_your_own_bokeh _________________ The best lens is the one you have with you.

I do hapen to have this lens and the original Zenit-18 camera that came with it. It`s a very funny looking lens ( because of the aperture ). Haven`t used it yet, but someday I will. Probably when the snow melt. I`m thinking about doing a big shootout with some of the rarer lenses that I have _________________ I have many great Russian cameras and lenses for sale on my ebay account, please check it out: http://www.ebay.com/sch/piksius/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=25&_trksid=p3686

Does the newer plastic version you talk about have this square aperture also? |

Nope. Regular rounded holes Only some of the 1.7 has the squared holes. The 1.9 is another version which has rounded holes but isn't multi coated. Comparing to a mint conditioned helios 44-2 (serial number 00xxxxx) 58mm which I also own, the MC 2.0 is the best optically and more resistant to flares.
Of course the 44-2 is build like a tank and will likely last forever. The 2.0 is all plastic and has that Canon 1.8 mark II cheap look. I bought the MC 2.0 for $10 plus shipping so I am not complaining. |

I have a 1.9 version, but mine is multi-coated. Very sharp. |

Those 1.7 models - the M and ME1, great lenses! Optically great lenses, I like my M more than most of my lenses for shooting almost everything. It is more sharper wide open than every fast 50 I have tried. And the render is so smooth and nice!
The ME1 is with better coatings compared to the M but personally to me the diaphragm is a big minus, it is two bladed and I can't realize why this lens is so expensive in ebay.
Another thing - the 1.7 is almost as fast as 1.4 lens, I have compared it with my 50 1.4 and it gives almost the same speed like it which is normal I think because it has very large lenses for a 1.7. I think that this is the best russian 50mm lens and if the russians have produced it with better coatings the price in the moment was going to be more like the price of the Rollei or CZ Planars or even more. _________________ 10-300мм 4.0 - 1.2 - 4.5 NIKON&Sony bodies / Sony 10-18, Pentax 28 2.8 II, CZJ 35 2.4, Nikkor DX 35 1.8, Samyang 35 1.4, KMZ 50 1.7, FDn 50 1.2 L, Nikkor 55 2.8, Rokkor 58 1.2, Soligor 85 1.8 Preset, Samyang 85 1.4, Canon FDn 85 1.2 L, Tokina AT-X 90 2.5, Canon FDn 135mm 2.0, Nikkor 180 2.8 ED, Tair 300 4.5

The reason for it being expensive is that there is no other lens like it . It`s a unique piece of optical enginuity. _________________ I have many great Russian cameras and lenses for sale on my ebay account, please check it out: http://www.ebay.com/sch/piksius/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=25&_trksid=p3686

To me personally the zenitar is a more rougher lens. It`s a bit sharped and the bokeh is more serious. the Helios-77m-4 ir similar to helios 40-2. It has the same round, swirly and very exceptional boeh. _________________ I have many great Russian cameras and lenses for sale on my ebay account, please check it out: http://www.ebay.com/sch/piksius/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=25&_trksid=p3686

The Helios 77 (all versions) is much softer than the Zenitar M 50 1.7, yes the Zenitar is not swirly in the bokeh but it is not that nervous like the helios. The render is very smooth even from 1.7 and actually Zenitar is around 1/3 stop faster than the Helios 77. About sharpness and lack of halo effect wide open Zenitar wins not only over the Helios 77, It wins over Takumars 50 1.4(not the 8 element version) which is quite a good result. At 1.7 the Zenitar is sharper than almost everything I have tried on this aperture or faster. _________________ 10-300мм 4.0 - 1.2 - 4.5 NIKON&Sony bodies / Sony 10-18, Pentax 28 2.8 II, CZJ 35 2.4, Nikkor DX 35 1.8, Samyang 35 1.4, KMZ 50 1.7, FDn 50 1.2 L, Nikkor 55 2.8, Rokkor 58 1.2, Soligor 85 1.8 Preset, Samyang 85 1.4, Canon FDn 85 1.2 L, Tokina AT-X 90 2.5, Canon FDn 135mm 2.0, Nikkor 180 2.8 ED, Tair 300 4.5

The reason why I would go for the Zenitar is it`s sharpness and the A/M aperture switch.
