I'm trying to learn about Sigma YS for M42. Please answer if you are able:

What is the difference between the Sigma YS-PM adapter and the Sigma YS-PE adapter?? Both appear to be YS to M42 adapters.

I did find this Sigma YS refererence, but it does not appear to answer my question:

I can only guess that one of them (PE IIRC) has stop down - DOF preview - button and the second one doesn't.

I couldn't find much, having pictures of both would help id differences.
My guess is one sends aperture setting to the camera the other doesn't.(S-M-C Takumar vs Super Takumar)

The adapter for Pentax ES (with aperture coupling) is marked ES.

PE is Pentax Screwmount M42

PM I don't know, perhaps Practica Mount (also M42)

I am so grateful for all your responses. Thank you.

I've been thinking about this as well. But I lack critical film camera experience which might help me in this situation to understand. I last did 35mm film in the early 1960's and it was with a rangefinder camera, a Konica III. That does not help.

So I must stretch and try to outreach my ignorance:

Would it be fair, or reasonable, to guess that the difference between the Sigma YS-PM and the Sigma YS-PE adapters might be analogous to the difference (with Vivitar) between their T4-M42 adapter and their TX-M42 adapter?? Question

It would help to know this because, unlike with Sigma, the differences between T4-M42 and TX-M42 adapters can easily be looked up. The Vivitar T4/TX series, it seems to me, penetrated the market better than the Sigma YS series, at least initially (i.e., setting aside the Sigma XQ lenses). Also Vivitar had Soligor with them on the T4s.

BTW, I think Sigma also had some company with their YS approach . . . but I'm still researching that.

I think both adapters should be identical in form & function, M42 with diaphragm pin but no aperture coupling, which came later. Before aperture coupling, all M42 mounts were identical (members please correct me if I'm wrong about that!), but had various names such as Contax Screwmount, Pentax Screwmount, Praktica, & M42. When camera lenses got aperture coupling, the names remained, but each manufacturer lens has different aperture linkage.

Besides Sigma, I've seen YS mount lenses branded Sun and Spiratone. The Spiratone was made by Sigma; I'm not sure about the Sun, but I don't think it is made by Sigma.

Thank you for your post and for those remarkable, revealing, and helpful photos! But . . . .

Oh my goodness another type of M42 YS adapter!!! I didn't see that coming.

I look upon the Sun YS lenses, in general, as being quite special. But I'm not at all up to speed on them as yet.

If only we could travel, by time machine, back to circa 1973. Probably any knowledgeable photo store proprietor back then could have detailed all the mount systems, Adaptall, T4/TX, YS, and whatever else I don't know about yet. It was all standard, routine, issue at that time. But today, except for Adaptall and Adaptall 2, some of the details have commenced to fade.
