I am new to this forum and to mf lenses, so basically cant make a decision when it come to buying 'gems' Smile
I use Canon 7D
Can Anyone tell me which lenses to look out for?....which one shuold i go for....
What Can be repaired?? (Stuck, oily apertures?? focus rings etc)
Which companies lenses i should keep my eyes open?
Some lenses which i have seen in our market :

1. Konica Hexanon AR 50mm F/1.7
2. SMC Pentax (50mm,28 mm) f 1.8,1.7
3. Minolta MC 50 mm f 1.4
3. Helios and other Russians (50 mm mostly)
4. Fujinon X 135 f 3.5
5. Mamiya Sekkor E (200 f4 this one i have) 28,50)
6. Pentakor 50 mm (written Made in German Democratic Republic)
7. Cosina (multiple)
contrast and sharpness are what i am looking for, but whenever i see a lens i cant make a decision as i dont know which glass (company) is good and which is OK...
I know its a lot to ask but i WANT to master these mf lenses.
Finally, someone told me to sell my Canon EF 50 mm f 1.8 and buy these mf lenses, will it be a good decision??
Thankyou All in advance as this forum and photography of on this forum is one of the main reason for me to turn to MFing Smile

1. Konica Hexanon AR 50mm F/1.7
Konica is not compatible with your camera, adapter not available.
2. SMC Pentax (50mm,28 mm) f 1.8,1.7
All Pentax good, take any of them.
3. Minolta MC 50 mm f 1.4
Minolta is not compatible with your camera, adapter not available.
Mount conversion possible-
3. Helios and other Russian (50 mm mostly)
All good if they are SLR lenses and they have Nikon or M42 mount.

4. Fujinon X 135 f 3.5
No idea-
5. Mamiya Sekkor E (200 f4 this one i have) 28,50)

6. Pentakor 50 mm (written Made in German Democratic Republic)
Pentacon 50mm , good one,
7. Cosina (multiple)

Ok first off, every interchangeable lens camera system has a register distance, the distance from the lens mount to the sensor, lenses with shorter register than the camera will require optics in the adapter, a mount conversion, to reach infinity, or it will only be useful for short distance/macro, lenses with longer register than the camera, all you need is a simple adapter of the correct thickness.
Canon's register is 44mm, the simplest ones to mount have longer than 44mm registers(Y), see the link below.
http://www.graphics.cornell.edu/~westin/misc/mounts-by-register.html
Nikkor, OM, M42, K, C/Y, & Leica R all being the most common to adapt.

Good lenses can and should be maintained/repaired/cleaned & lubed, manual focus primes are the easiest to work on, how hard depends on the lens since they are all different.

Generally, all the main brand names will have good lenses, the rest you'll have to do research on, or take a chance.
Look through the forums and Flickr and make a list of lenses you like and keep it on your cell phone for when you are out and find a lens.
You can check ebay completed auctions to see what they are selling for, a good deal is a good deal and you could make a profit, the main issues to look out for are fungus, fogging, scratches, a flashlight works great at highlighting dust/fungus/etc... also look for tight sticky focus ring, sticky/slow/oily aperture blades(although as long as they move they will work good enough for your purpose) Canon nFD lenses are hard to test the aperture without an adapter/camera with you.

I would keep the AF lens, they come in useful for action photography or anything quick moving like a carnival. I still use my AF's ( all three of them Laughing ) for that kind of thing, but I use the MF's daily. I like the way that MF lenses slow me down and encourage me to think about the image I want to achieve, and I think all the lenses on your list will do just that.

If register distance allow it okay, otherways you can focus only may up to 50cm... so not that easy.

yes and no...

Yes if he digs into the lens, remove the old mount, maybe shave off some stuff... and even that, the lens might hit your mirror.... it's real fun when it hits the mirror.

I would not use MF lens with EF mount, I think the easiest converter is the M42 and the OM mount... the rest need some serious work to make them work (not perfectly but some what).

Just pop money for a m43 or NEX camera, they're dirt cheap, adapters are cheap.

Any mirrorless should do fine except Pentax K01.
