Was wondering if they are of different design, besides slight difference in FL.

Is one better than the other?

As far as I know, all J8Ms are 50mm, and the 53mm is the Helios-103 which is 1.8/53. J8M is a copy of Sonnar 2/50, Helios-103 is a copy of Summicron 2/50.

Hummm, so this is a misprint then?

I have the Helios-103 that is on a yet-to-arrvive Kiev 4a (1.8/53)

Didn't know the Helios was a Summicron copy, thanks!

Yes, I think that is a misprint.

The Helios-103 is great, I got one, Attila and Orio did too, it's only something like 40 bucks for a brand new one from Moscow, it's a really good lens.

Really like this last one, can't wait to try the Helios. Wonder if the misprinted lens is worth some money, probably not.
All the other Jupe 8s I've seen are 50 FL.

Focal length is the same for the all Contax/Kiev RF prime lenses and russian post-war M39 rangefinder prime lenses: 52.42mm. It's required for rangefinder coupling. Different writings on the nameplates - "50mm, 53mm, 55mm" is only different rounding of the same numbers.

BTW: Konica Hexanon AR 40/1.8 and Minolta MD Rokkor 45/2 has the same focal length - about 43mm.

Misprint? Yeah, right. Rolling Eyes

Not unusual at all. See http://sovietcams.com/index.php?-1090910983 item PT3610 at the end.
