Hi everyone, I'm new member to the forum and I promise I will be good member of the mf community Smile... will also put some of my images in gallery sub forum ...

As my first topic I have one question for experienced m42 users: recently I stepped into M42 world with my 5d mk2 camera , i first bought Helios 58/2 incredible lens, and after that I started search for some good 135/2.8... Today I bought Pentacon auto (six blades) 135/2.8 in good condition but there is some damage to coatings on the rear glass wich seems not to effect the image quality...
I can also buy Revuenon 135mm f/2.8 M42 in great condition, but I can't find any good review on net for that lens... this is very good one for the others http://forum.mflenses.com/twelve-2-8-13 … 39463.html
can somebody tell me how the Revuenon lens stands in comparation with Pentacon and the other lenses from that review? I'm not able to try the lens before bying it so I wander is it sharper that Pentacon that I already have?

get the super multi coated takumar 135mm/f2.5 lens (m42). Its excellent.

I have tried Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Orestor 135mm 2.8 before. I think it's excellent too! Wink

I agree, that should be same lens as Pentacon preset (15 blades)... it's seems to be a little bit sharper than Pentacon Auto which I bought but harder to find... My biggest mystery is that Revuenon lens which seems to be rare and still can't find good review on net... there is one in perfect condition, almost new here in Serbia for 40 euros but I can't try it because it's not in my town...

SMC 2,5/135 V.2

Steinheil D 2,8/135 - if macro version, better.

Mamiya DTL or SX 2,8/135 (perhaps tokina lens). Very cheap and good lens.

CZJ Sonnar 3,5/135 (MC or not, no matter).

The russian tair, jupiters, all 135 mm are very good too.

There are a lot of very good 135s in M42 good to very good. The meyer/pentacon is one of them. And not between the more sharps, but very good IQ.

I really can't say anything positive about the two samples of the Pentacon 135/2.8 (later style barrell with 6 or so aperture blades) that I had. Both very soft and simply worse in any respect than any other 135 that I tried.

In contrast, the really good and sharp 135s that I have (some sold, but not due to quality issues), are the Zeiss Jena 135/3.5, Nikkor 135/3.5 (oldest style, non AI), Zeiss Contarex 135/2.8 (impossible to use on Canon DSLR, though) and my latest acquisition, an Olympus OM 135/2.8.

Revue was, to my knowledge, only a reseller. So they have lenses from very different manufacturers. Some are really great, but I have no idea how many different Revue 135s there were and if they all were the same quality?

Thomas

it seems that there are variations between Pentacon samples... my sample is only acceptable @2.8, but at the position between 2.8 and 4 it's pretty good... when I resize images from 21mp to 12mp the sharpness becomes very good... I will make a little test later at infinity and at close distances and put results here...

I am a fan of the Meyer Optik Orestor, that's really nice!! But there are many more nice 135's.
For instance: Jupiter 11 3.5/135 (also mentioned above), Panagor E PMC 2.8/135 and there was a Chinon I once had that was pretty good.

Some say you can't go wrong with the 135 formula... but there are differences. Some are just not that good. But that's with all lenses, and after all: it is all in the eye of the beholder!

Of the 6 samples of MC Pentacon auto 135/2.8 I have, most are very good to excellent. Only one is below average. So yes, there is sample variation, but it's not as significant as many think.

By the way, many samples come with faulty aperture. Now, if you shoot those wide open, there may be a little loss of contrast: in a properly adjusted lens, aperture blades are just slighly visible from the front at f/2.8. They don't appear visible if you look through the lens from the back though, but they are just closed enough to slightly increase contrast by obstructing light path to some shiny surface in the lens. With my samples, I had to repair aperture mechanisms in 4 out of 6 (!) lenses.

I think before this thread is over you will get almost as many recommendations as there are lenses out there. My recommendation is to be happy with your Pentacon if it is truly the same as the Orestor. If compelled to get something else, consider the Tair and wait for the right price. I also suggest you not start purchasing any lens that is a good bargain as you will accumulate a horde of lenses, use only a couple, and ultimately invest what a very good one would have cost. I can't imagine needing sharper than the Tair, and the bokeh is one of the very best.

Woodrim is right, it's the same as with the 50's. So many lenses, so many opinions....

I happen to have a horde of lenses, and guess what: you end up grabbing the same ones over and over!

I have a Revuenon in that focal length. Don't know is it the same as the one you want to buy. Comparing to the Pentacon, it's almost the same. Wide open not sharp, stopped down it's sharper, some purple fringing, contrast so-so, even the bokeh is similar ... I wouldn't pay 40 euros for it.
On Limundo and Kupujem-prodajem you can find much better deals.

There are 2 different versions of the Revuenon, one is the "special", and that one is good.

those are all the good suggestions Smile, I will keep shooting with my Pentacon until something like Tair (which is better for sure) shows up for sale... it seems that all cheapest 135s al pretty much similar...

I think there are many more versions of Revuenon than just two. I've seen a few, and I'm sure there are more.

That of course is highly possible, Revue was merely a rebrander, I know of only 2!

I fully agree with Woodrim. Tair is sharp and got very nice bokeh too! Wink
