Lens 'A' v Lens 'B' REVEALED

So, I have two lenses of identical focal length and aperture.
I took them out today to shoot some comparison shots.
All shots were taken with a 7D, on a Manfrotto tripod, with MLU and wireless remote.

At apertures other than wide open they are almost identical in performance.
They look different at maximum aperture.

Which do you prefer and why? Wink

Lens 'A' is always the first shown.
No artistic merit intended.
No post production, shot in RAW.

One example of 100% crop, again wide open.

They are similar. I'd choose lens A, mostly because of OOF rendering, that seems the biggest difference between the two.

Also, the last crop look sharper on lens A.
Both look good, anyway.

Spontaneously: lens A.
Why? Better contrast/resolution.

BTW, are you going to reveal what lens A and lens B are?

A for sharpness, contrast, colour & bokeh.

Also, B has some more pronounced CA going on.

A is clearly sharper. Smoother bokeh too, but I really like the bokeh B too. More distracting but a bit more interesting IMHO.

Lens A for sure...

All in good time Wink

Definitely A except for funky impressionistic pictures. B is a bit like Meyer trioplan 100/2.8

Tough choice, keep both?

A is a little sharper, but I liked the drawing and the bokeh of B.

I would go for lens B.

P.S:
B reminds me of the Jupiter-9...

I've always thought the bokeh of B looks like the Trioplan bokeh. Very Happy

A=more contrast, grabs my eye first. I have never, nor will I ever give a diddly damn/rats ass about bokeh-didn't even look at it when comparing these.

I prefer A as well, better bokeh and contrast. However, B seems quite good too.

I respect your opinion but compare picture 5 and 6. 5 is booring but 6 is quite nice, and that's because of the bokeh... Then agai, that's just my subjective taste.

A - only for the deeper, more vibrant colour and contrast. Ah actually think B is sharper...'till the 100% crop #5+6 - B looks more closely focused than A and strangely, more colour and contrast. B'S OOF looks like my Pentacon auto MC, 2.8/135.

Cool

Oh but my Pentacon's not as soft at 100%... Cool

Each to their own Wink
Though I think a good subject with good bokeh will always beat the same subject with bad bokeh.

The out-of-focus circles in the second lens are stronger. The A lens seems preferable overall.

Definitely A over B, due to better contrast and less distracting background highlight flaring.

I'll add that I went to great lengths to ensure focus was exactly the same with both lenses. I used live view with focus peaking and took numerous exposures until I was sure I couldn't get better focus matching between the two lenses.

I also think that despite the two lenses claiming to be the same focal length, it's clear that lens B is slightly longer than A. Again, I took great care not to move the tripod between shots yet there is a very slight difference in perspective.

Here's an example with more distance to the subject;

#2

And two examples much closer to the subject;

Again, all images are wide open.

If anyone believes they can identify either lens, please go right ahead. Very Happy

A very big clap because that's Giant Rhubarb in the background, also known as Dinosaur Food. The leaves grow up to 12 feet across. Surprised
