i'm thinking of getting an ultrawide zoom for my gxr m mount camera. i would like the wide range to be at the most 21mm but hopefully wider, and the zoom end to be at most 35mm. i want really good IQ, but most of all, i really want something compact. ive had both the canon L 17-40 and the sigma 10-15, both good FL range but much too big for the gxr. i dont care about mount as long as its somehow adaptable to m mount.

any thoughts?
thanks!
tony

Unfortunately ultra-wide zooms tend to be large, as you've discovered. The only small ones I can think of are for Micro Four Thirds or Sony NEX, so not adaptable to your GXR Mount A12. Two compact options do spring to mind, and both should have great IQ, but neither is what you'd call inexpensive... the Leica Wide Angle Tri-Elmar (WATE) 16-18-21mm (actually a zoom), or the Konica 21/35mm (two fixed focal lengths). Either a snip at around $3,000 to $4,000!

Here's a page with some information (though it only covers the earlier, longer 28-35-50mm Tri-Elmar):

Eeks, if the only small compact options are 3-4k you might as well drop 300 bucks on a Samsung NX with 20-50 zoom. To stick with the GXR and have wide but compact a prime is probably a better option. Orio's Snapshot Skopar 4/25 keeps impressing me, that's probably the best bet for a lower price option.

If you want really tiny, fairly wide and dirt cheap to just try out, what about an Industar-69 2.8/28 from a Chaika half frame camera? Common on ebay and 20-30 bucks. Looks like an I-50 but even smaller. M39 but the register is 28.8mm instead of the usual 28 so for infinity you either have to adjust the adapter or the lens. It's a tessar type and covers aps-c, has funky swirly bokeh and is pretty sharp in the centre, like an I-50. Because it's so tiny, it would fit in your pocket and make a good general use lens for casual shooting. M39-M chinese adapter for it for a few bucks then a sheet of abrasive paper and sand the adapter down by 0.8mm, et voila, you have a really tiny M mount lens.

On my crop Canons I use the 10-22mm

It is ridiculously good

If you could compromise slightly on the widest focal length, Pentax made an SMC 24-35mm M lens that was pretty small (though the PK-M adapter will add a little length):

It's 50mm (2 inches) long at its smallest settings on the camera, 65mm (2.5 inches) in diameter and weighs under 300g. This is likely to cost less than 1/10th of the price of the Leica/Konica lenses...

dave that is a super suggestion, esp since i'd never heard of the lens. i will definitely keep it in mind. the unfortunate issue is on my 1.5 crop, the wide end is only 36mm. the hole i have is really closer to 28 and wider...
thanks
