a few days ago I made a "fast and dirty" near center sharpness test of 9 lenses on NEX5N
Focal lengths vary from 38mm to 60mm but I had not changes position of camera nor object.
fast and dirty above all because set up is far from ideal, but well, why not I show the results
lenses used are
Pen-F Zuikos f1.8/38mm, f1.4/40mm, f1.5/60mm
Auto Takumar f2/55, Super Takumar f1.8/55mm, S-M-C Takumar f1.4/50mm
MC Rokkor-PG f1.4/50mm, Nikkor-S Auto f1.4/50mm, RE.Auto-Topcor f1.8/58mm
the set up ( taken with Pen-F 1.4/40, sharpened after resize )
focused on number f2.8 seen right of the red point on the mount
100% crops, shot in RAW, converted in LR3.5, only adjustment was "Auto Tone" ( adjusting resp. "equalizing" exposure )
Pen-F f1.8/38
Pen-F f1.4/40mm
Pen-F f1.5/60mm
Auto Takumar f2.55
Super Takumar f1.8/55mm
S-M-C Takumar f1.4.50mm
MC Rokkor-PG f1.4/50mm
Nikkor-S Auto f1.4/50mm
Tokyo Kogaku f1.8/58mm RE.Auto Topcor
as mentioned set up is less than ideal, but if anyone is interested there are the same crops taken at f2.8 and f5.6 _________________ my photos on flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/kuuan/collections |

I love looking at these comparison shots! Yes, let's see the smaller apertures too!

for showing full frames I must see where to host them
( on flickr I would have to change date one by one after uploading to not having them appear on the front page which I would want to avoid. Anywhere else the original files could be hosted for free? ) _________________ my photos on flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/kuuan/collections |

I believe that all these lenses are good lenses and that this test can show that sharpness of the Pen-F lenses, specially of the 40mm and 60mm are up there with the very best. I knew that the f1.4/40 would do well and I am very happy with the result of the f1.5/60!
The Takumars I know very well and their very good results were expected, the S-M-C f1.4/50 being quite decisively sharper wide open than the f1.4/50 Nikkor and Rokkor, albeit with the most pronounced PF, and still sharpest of the f1.4/50 @ f2.8.
The Nikkor disappointed a bit, the Rokkor and Topcor proved not to be top performers wide open but top, sharper than some others, at f5.6
( btw. for corner sharpness, from other tests I did time ago not including Pen-F 1.5/60 and Topcor but some others more, I would expect the Auto Takumar f2/55 to do best and the Pen-F 1.8/38 to positively surprise ) _________________ my photos on flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/kuuan/collections |

Thanks for showing those, kuuan ! The more comparisons I see, the more convinced I become that "there ain't no bad standard lenses" (apart from my 50mm Domiplan ) _________________ Stephen
