Wide open it is very soft. Still soft at f1.4.
By f2 it becomes acceptable for general usage. Personally, i dont find softnesss to be a problem, i just use it for different purposes. For portraits it lends a very dreamy look - borderline ghosts and spirits and since the oof rendering is not jarring to my eyes, its a good choice for mugshots
Talk is cheap. Here are the shots -> (mild post processing)

Considering its a sub 500€ superfast lens for rangefinders, a little pp helps bring sharpness in while keeping the eccentric bokeh intact, i like it! _________________

It's terrible at f1.2 and f1.4 ... stopping it down to f2 makes it bearable and like 99% of the lenses, at 5.6 it's usable
I wouldn't use this lens for taking pictures everyday but once in awhile it can be a single lens solution - day time when its nice and sunny, stopping it down to f5.6 and using it at night at f1.4 with lots and lots of sharpening in lightroom
most interestingly, of all the superfast 50's i used so far, this has the least amount of viewfinder blockage _________________

I had two copies of this lens, and tried a third one; none of them was soft; or, to say better, all were way less soft than any Noctilux (except current); two copies needed to fix focus issues, wich is a tipical rangefinder problem, and I did it by myself, beeing a mere calibration problem. From 2,8, even too contrasty.
I suspect that your copy could be not the best, or that M9 sensor doesn't like it. |

I was also interested in that lens and so I also know some much sharper looking sample shots wide open. It don't believe that it's sharper than the Noctilux F1 though. Maybe needs to be shimmed or it's a cucumber. _________________ I'm not a collector, I'm a tester

The Canon 50 1,2 has maybe the best calibration way I ever seen: somewhere around the front bague, there is a small screw; if you untight it, you can screw or unscrew all the glass until you reach the right position (best at infinity); if the lens doesn't have other problems, in 5 minutes you have done. |
