I never thought I´d be able to afford buying any takumar 85mm 1.8 or 1.9 but recently I had the chance to buy a (pretty beat up) copy of "auto takumar". (it came together with tair 11-2). I own a jupiter 85 f2 and that´s my only comparison lens in the mm. I find both quite hard to focus wide open and very soft/glowy results. After just a couple of days with the takumar I think it´s a bit less soft compared to jupiter and strangely I think it is most sharp at the edges.. that is where I find I recognize the clarity I love in the other takumars I own.
Well, some of the results so far...(and quite a big virtual trash bin goes with it), feel free to give advice and critique or experiences!

Congrats to your new gem , I like more deeper DOF, F4 should server better than wide open. _________________ -------------------------------

Thanks both!
Of course, these were just test shots and why have a f1.8 lens if it doesn´t perform at f1.8? It seems no infinity focus at wider apertures, stopped down to f8/ or more yes, it looks like good focus at infinity.
Anyway more pictures will soon be taken at bigger range of f numbers... I noticed when looking at the aperture that it´s not round, more oval when closed, plus at the sides the blades seem to have space to come up (hard to explain, will take picture ). Is this something that I should fix? This lens is not in a particular good state (but no fungus and functioning) I can see someone already opened it before, does anybody here have experience opening the auto takumar 85mm?

mine might have the same problem: when fully open often it is not fully round, one or two blades look as if they would not open fully. Looking through the lens I hardly can make that out but can see it in the photos.
I have not tried to fix it yet _________________ my photos on flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/kuuan/collections |

Mine looks oval when fully closed, and when @1.8 you can still see couple of mm of the blades then when flicking the auto switch they completely open and disappear from view. I´m not experienced in opening lenses so quite insecure as I don´t want to mess up what is now still working. |
