Today I succeeded in buying a lens of a type I had been hunting for a long time, a Taylor, Taylor & Hobson Cooke Aviar Anastigmat Series II f/4.5 5.25 inch (133 mm) in a Compur shutter mounted on a Kodak 1A Series III folder camera, which uses the obsolete 116 size film so I have no scruples extracting the lens.

The Aviar is similar to dialyt type lenses but was actually derived from the triplet by splitting the middle element in two, it has 4 element in 4 groups so the contrast will probably be slightly low. However, the resolution ought to be quite good as this lens was designed during WWI for aerial photography and was judged to be superior to all corresponding German lenses of the time. Aviars were produced for almost 50 years and are considered to be the best anastigmats of all time, sharp already wide open. Despite the lack of coating even pre-WWII Aviars are still quite highly regarded for LF photography.

Here is a link to a catalog page from 1930's: http://www.cameraeccentric.com/html/info/cookecat/aviar.html, and a link to a description of Cooke lenses: http://www.f32.net/Services/Equipment/Lenses/cooke.php, a description of the Aviar is about one third down the page.

I'll test the lens as soon as it arrives,

Veijo
